Yesterday I watched "A Beautiful Mind." It's a story about a schizophrenic. I've known a couple schizophrenics. The movie made me wonder about their experiences.
I wouldn't want to live that way. However, I have a lot of compassion for people who do live with schizophrenia and people who are close to them.
Have you seen the movie? Did it surprise you? It sure did surprise me! The writers, directors and producers really did a good job.

i've watched it twice! i love it so much. yeah i wonder hows the experience like. communicating with someone who is not really there.
i used to hang out with my granma. she has a fren who's a lil bit senile. she talks to herself. or even to her 'friend' and had a good eye contact too with 'him'. her conversations are real and as if there is someone talking back to her. she nods, she laughs. a lil bit scary at first but later i got used to it an just follow the flow. for example asking her friend to come along to have dinner with us or such thing. those days we use the word senile or maybe she's really schizophrenic when come to think about it!

It sounds like grandma might be dealing with schizophrenie. Lots of people talk to themselves, but don't have imaginary friends.

I have watched it, although quite some time ago now. I never realized the twist until it was revealed in the film - although when the little girl was introduced, I did think "I thought she was older." One thing that did make it interesting was the fact that it's actually based on a true story.

Yes. On the second dvd, John Nash is interviewed. I didn't get to see the interview because my friend's dvd wouldn't scroll.
The twist was my big surprise :-D

Yes I saw the movie, no it didn't surprise me at all, my husband was schizophrenic, it actually romanticized it and did not show the true devastation of that illness on people and the people that love them.
I also was a therapist for schizophrenics for a year at our mental hospital.

Yes, I was able to watch it some time ago. It was such a great movie and I like it very much most especially that you will be surprised when you will find out what really happened. In so far as people who are schizophrenic, I have not meet any yet. I guess it is really different to know what they are thinking or what are their thought. Best to you joyce!

Thanks for your comment. I just thought about a comparison between schizophrenia and autism. Was Dustin Hoffman in Rainman autistic? Anyway, his character depicted his genius in a few areas like counting the cards in Blackjack, counting the matches that dropped out of the box, memorizing the phone book. I don't know that the movie was based on a true story...just something that crossed my mind.

It was a long time ago I saw the movie and it wasn't with the interview. My sister n law has this disorder , and I worked with some schizophrenics when I was doing my o & p and student teaching for college and then immediately afterward. It is amazing unfortunately when one does become successful.
It is a great movie and a great story his wife was wonderful.
if you haven't seen it this is a must see

Hi French --
You've been up close and personal, so have personal experience with schizophrenics in their daily lives.
I can only say that I've known a couple in a support group I used to attend. I do have a better understanding after seeing the movie.
Thanks for your input.

Hi joyce,
I have seen the movie 3 times and I love it..I appreciate the love of the woman to her husband who stood with him until he fully recovered!
In real life, I do know anyone who suffer such disease!
I really admire the effort of all the people behind the scene!

She was truly an amazing woman. Even on bad days she made herself see him in a positive light. It must've been difficult at times.
I think the "behind the scenes" parts made it the movie it is.

HI joyceshookery!
I've seen the film many times, it's brilliant. What amazes me is that Nash's theorys have influenced many branches of IT and Mathematics. What I find even more amazing is that he didn't overcome his illness, he sublimated it with his will. The man was a genius plain and simple.

It is a great movie, really well done. I have seen it several times. Nash, the man, amazes me. I thought the director did a great job telling his story.

I haven't seen this movie but I'm pretty sure that it only touches the surface if it does that at all.
Moviemakers are so commercialised its not funny.
There are several hundred versions of this illness.
And, as I told my brother, and a few others in my own time with it, no one will ever understand what it is like.

The movie is based on a true story of one man's experience. Others might have it without the same symptoms. People who don't have it can only get a glimpse into it.
I'm glad I became more aware of how schizophrenia can affect some people and their loved ones.
Thank you for puttint in your perspective.

Interesting that your husband is doing better without the medications. Apparently the meds have unpleasant side effects, but John Nash in the movie quit his meds and his schizophrenia hallucinations came back in full force. The movie is based on a true story.
Thanks for your response.

Sounds like you still remember it quite well. It must've had a big impact. I think I'll remember the movie too. Yes, he was very smart and that's cool, indeed.

I haven't watched this movie... i actually do not know a person with schizophrenia... and that sort of condition is not really popular in my country... and i think some people are schizophrenic but are not diagnosed as such... because there are not enough institutions that can take care of them...
I think i will watch this movie when i have the time... thanks for sharing...

I have seen a "A beautiful mind" and I thought it was a great movie. I had heard a lot about it, and I was not disappointed. It really surpriced me and that is one of the reasons why I liked it so much. I am not schizophrennic myself, but my fiance is, he also liked the film a lot and he recommended that I watch it. He liked the film, because he could recognize many of the things from his own life. I also think that the writer and producers did a good job when they made this film, and I would like to watch it again.

I watched the movie on its first day of showing in the movie houses (I'm a Kurt Russel fan) and though I know no one with such condition,it made me whisper a prayer for those who are experiencing it and for their love ones who are taking care of them. Yes, that's what "A Beautiful Mind" is, powerful and touching. It is one of the movie that became bigger than the big artists behind it.
I hope more films like this will be made.
