Have you or anyone you know ever applied for and received a grant?

I am looking into beginning my own newspaper. Although I actually have the programs I need to begin I would like to get a grant to pay for my first few weeks of printing and add a few additional supplies. My newspaper will start out small, only being published one day a week. And I will distribute it for free in the beginning. After about six months I will ask people to subscribe to it rather than continuing to give it for free. I will be doing the reporting, selling ads, designing ads and laying out the pages. My son will help with sports, my daughter will help with photos and my husband will help with ad sales. The paper will be printed in another town not so far away and we will distribute them to stores and a few homes within our county. I figure getting a grant will be a great way to pay for insurance, licensing, etc. I don't want to purchase a book. I am talking about an actual government grant. Could also use tips from any grant writers out there. Thanks for any help.

I had a friend that applied for a grant once, but it was for opening a different kind of business, newspapers are hard to open and they generate very little money, most don't even break even, and lose money, I knew of a few people who tried to get grants and didn't get them, I am sorry I can't be of more assistance than that.

that is the point, the old ones are solid, the new ones are the ones that have trouble staying in business.
But do what you feel you have to get it working,

We have applied for State grants for our county historical society. One thing I know you have to do is show the purpose of your project and prove that you deserve one. They will also track how you use the money. Good luck, I don't think it is the easiest thing in the world to obtain. It would help if you knew a state or federal politician that can "push" for you.
