No need to be broke living in Alberta

There is no reason that anybody who lives in Alberta is completely broke. We have bottle depots to return many things and get money for it. A person can return any bottle or container that they were charged a levy charge for, when they purchased it. So for example, we get 10 cents back for any beer bottle or can and 20 cents for any container that is bigger than a two litre. A liquer bottle is worth 20 cents. So if a person is really broke all they have to do is walk the ditches along the number one highway which goes right through our city, and pick up empties. One day about 4 years ago my husband and I were going through some tough times so we went walking the ditches and picked up bottles and threw them all into the back of our half ton and when we got home we bagged them all and took them in. We walked for 4 hours one saturday and 4 hours one sunday and when we took them in on Monday morning we were surprised to get $450.00 for our empties. So why then are there street people here starving? All they have to do is go bottle collecting and they would have money for food, instead of bumming from people. But I guess that would mean work for them and I can only think that most of them don't want to work, or pick up bottles. Alrighty then, talk to you later my friend, Have a good mylotting day, Chris

Hi chris, it didn’t occur to me that you and your husband could get such a great amount of money just walking for two days and spending 4 hours for the respective days to collect only empty bottles. This means that if a person is willing to spend some of his time to do something like collecting empty bottles and used stuffs and etc for recycle, at least he could earn enough income for his own daily expense. Might be I live a small town and here in my place people are not allowed to go begging from door to door or live by begging. We rarely see starving people sitting by the street. The authority concern would arrest them and sent to the center for community change. The aged people would be sent to the old folks’ home whereas kids would be settled at the orphanage. Anyway we still could see a couple of idiocy persons in their indecent clothes and appearance hanging around in the busy streets occasionally. Happy posting and take care.

Your home town is so much different than big cities. Here in Calgary we have hundreds and maybe even thousands, of homeless people and they sleep right out on the streets. People here also beg on the streets but don't go knocking on doors.

Yeah, from our mutual interaction here, I notice that the situation in my place is totally different from that in your city. I just wonder out of my curiosity what is the main reason to cause such a great amount of homeless people to mooch about the streets, and to earn their living by begging and asking donation from the passers in either side of the streets!? It’s great pity to see them to pass their time days and nights along the street sides. Yeah, you are right. They have to find ways to earn money for their daily expense but not just waiting for others to help them. I’m afraid that to have such great amount of idling people in the street would arouse the bad eggs lucking around who have malicious intention to hunt for their preys to earn their daily living there, so you must be very careful when going out. I hope the authority concern in your place would take appropriate measures to settle such problem very soon.

As my mentor used to say: Winners always find ways to win, losers always find ways to lose. So I guess the main reason why there are poor people living in your area is because they just don't want to work and they want everything to be given to them. I could definitely understand other areas where regardless how hardworking you are, you just have tough luck. But with how you explained your area, I don't think a person would even have problems finding empty bottles, right? They just have to roam around and look for those. Alberta is truly a nice place to be in, you'll never go hungry if you just know how to look for money. Whew. Wished my country was like that.

Many thanks for the best response mark! Still hoping my country could be that generous without being overly spoon-feeding (since that actually motivates people to work rather than just wait for what the government would give).

In NS there we have that too, and i'm not sure what the prices are you get back for bottles, i just got back here.. in ontario they do not have it.. There are a lot of people here who collect cans and bottles, but id ont think those people are concerned with food.. i think they have more intentions of getting full bottles or.. full pipes.. lol
