What can you do with about to expire bread?

While shopping the other day, the girlfriend and I decided instead of buying an expensive fresh loaf of bread that I'd just go ahead and buy a loaf of bread that was under 50 cents because it was about to it's sell by date. It's not bad bread in fact it made pretty tasty sandwiches the other day but we're trying to figure out what else we can do with it instead of sandwiches or croutons. Online searching hasn't yielded many results. So far it says that you can make salads, croutons, and french toast. Otherwise, I'm coming up pretty short with ideas. Do you have any ideas on what to make with bread that is about to hit the sell by date? Do you do anything creative that has turned into a big hit?

Those ideas you listed are about the only things I would try. When all else fails you could feed the ducks.

feed the fish :) anyways, it's good for using it as kids' experiment on fungus. they have that one in one of the syllabus. the one that you have to put several breads in different type of condition, in the dark, under the sunlight, with or without water absorbed in the bread.

On a cooking show awhile back I saw where they made egg cups out of them. Basically they dipped the bread like you were preparing for french toast but then they put them in greased muffin cups, pushing the center down so the bread made a cup. They then baked these until done. After that you add scrambled egg, crumbled bacon and a drizzle of maple syrup to the top. It looked rather elegant for such a simple idea. I haven't tried them, but it sure sounded good.

This sounds like a really tasty idea. Maybe I'll have to make a quick grocery store trip and try this one time.

Well, I know your not interested in making playdoh with it which some do make it with bread. But my husband likes it when bread is toasted and cut into bits and put in a meatloaf. You can make grilled cheese sandwiches, you can also lay 4 slices bread in bottom of 8x8 or 9x9 pan and add crumbled bacon or sausage and crumbled hash browns and then add 4 large eggs that had been beaten over the mixture then sprinkle with cheese..You can also add sautéed onions and green peppers or hot ones if you prefer also cover tightly and let set 1/2 hour in fridge..or let set over night in fridge and cook at 350(oven temperature may vary) for about 30 minutes or until a knife or fork comes out clean..sprinkle with more cheese if desired cut and enjoy.Oops! you can add salt and pepper or other seasoning to your taste.

These sound like really good ideas! Too bad we don't have any eggs right now. The bread says best if sold by the 21 so we have probably a few more days to go shopping and grab some eggs and other items. Thanks!

bread is good beyond the sell by date. It will just be harder than a fresh loaf. You can make French toast which is bread dipped in egg. There is also bread crumbs and or dressing that is bread broken up and onions, celery, eggs, seasoning and chicken broth. Then there is bread pudding. Same as the dressing only with cinnamon or nutmeg, milk and eggs.

Well, the first things that came to mind are the things you just mentioned, like croutons. I've never tried to make French Toast of expired bread, but then again I don't think with my culinary skills that I should try. It was bad enough having to eat my sister's french toast way back in high school when she took home ec...

I make dressing from my old bread. Adding broth, chooped onion, celery and sage. If you're not wanting to use it right away then stick it in the freezer until you need it. I went to the bread store and bought a few loaves at Chriatmas to make dressing from (I feed a large crowd) and didn't use one loaf so I stuck it in the freezer where it is still residing until I want to make dresing again. Other than dressing I have made grilled cheese sandwiches from stale bread and fed the birds that's about all! LOL

My grandmother always made bread pudding with her stale bread. She was very much about not wasting anything... and in this economy, more and more people will be like that, I'm thinking. Anyway, to a lot of people, bread pudding sounds gross LOL It doesn't sound like a dessert but it's really good! Here are some sites where you can get recipes. My grandmother always made it with raisins... she never measured out the bread though. She just used as many slices (crusts removed and fed to the birds) as it took to slice or cube and line the pan. Some recipes also suggest topping the pudding with a sauce. We never did that. We just ate it warm, sometimes sprinkled with a bit of sugar for the kids, and my grandmother liked hers with a bit of heavy cream. Lots of variety and super easy to prepare -- it was one of the very first things she taught me to make :) http://southernfood.about.com/od/dessertsaucerecipes/r/bl80503c.htm http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Bread-Pudding-II/Detail.aspx http://www.famousfrenchdesserts.com/bread-pudding-recipes.html

bread - I like to use the bread to make delicious sandwiches.
I think I will use the bread to make some delicious sandwiches for my friends. So that we can finish the bread as soon as possible and before the expired date:) I love China

I think some people use expired bread to make pudding. I havent taste one before but i think its not really harmful to eat because it has to go though some process to become a pudding. I guess some people just dont like wasting food around.

I may not eat it and just buried in on a soil so it'll become a fertilizer. If it's 2 weeks before it expires and there are no molds appearing, I may eat it or give it a way to other poor children, I make sure first that it's safe to eat before I gave. Or maybe will use it as chicken or duck feeds since they wont be affected of a such expired bread..

you can make some garlic bread.... you can also get some of that shredded cheese and after toasting the bread with the garlic and butter sprinkle the cheese on it. I looooove homemade garlic bread.

Take some little kids to the lake and feed the ducks bread. The ducks and the kids won't care that the bread's about to expire, and you will make memories out of that 50 cents.

How about using that bread to make homemade breadcrumbs?? You could also add seasonings to it like a bit of salt, pepper, parsley, basil...whatever seasonings you like

I would suggest popping the loaf in the freezer and just defrosting it in the microwave as you need it. 5 to 10 seconds is usually enough to defrost 2 pieces of bread. Bread is usually good for a while after the sell by date too, as long as it isn't moldy it's fine. If it's a little on the hard/dried out side then a few seconds in the microwave will perk it up.

you could make 'verloren brood (dutch, wich means 'lost bread'), its very tasty, just take your old bread and eggs, put the eggs in a bowl and mix them with some milk (use 0,20 liter of milk with 5 eggs) and add some sugar, then do it over some slices of bread bread and put them in a frying pan, wait untill they have a gold-brown colour (turn them around some time) its typical belgian, you can eat it with sugar, chocolate paste,... (ps: im from belgium and i dont know the correct words, so if you dont understand what i mean, just send me an e-mail and i'll try to explain it so you do understand)
