Fighting Ban a BAD Idea

Recently there has been a lot of people "outside" the NHL calling for the ban of fighting in NHL games. They are calling for suspensions and fines as a deterrent. In my opinion taking the fighting out of the NHL would be a big mistake. Fighting is merely a way for the players to POLICE each other on the ice for doing things seen as less the honorable. Some examples of this are running into/over the goaltender, charging, boarding, and devastating head shots. The referees are unable to catch every occurrence, they are after all only human, so fighting gives players a way to send a message to the other team.."WATCH IT". If the media and outside influences get their way and take that option away from players there will be an increase in the dirty hits department....you throw an undetected elbow into our star players face, the only way to get retribution is by doing something just as dirty, and dangerous back. I'm sure if you did your homework you can clearly see that when two fighters square off against each other, the outcome is normally a lot less disastrous, compared to throwing a cheap shot! Whats your opinion?

You took the words right out of my mouth. I am so sick and tired of outsiders trying to "improve" the classic game of hockey.Ever since the strike hockey has been a non entity or at least a step child on ESPN. People who don't watch hockey think it is All fighting. They are so wrong. And sadly, they will never change their minds because unless you have Versus or a local team that Comcast carries, They will never get to see a Real hockey game. All the people who want fighting out of the game have never seen how fast and how a dirty player can really hurt a player worst than any fight. I am glad you started this post. I remember doing one similar about a year ago. I get so p*ssed off when novices think that if the hockey gets rid of fighting that the sport will become widespread. If they take fighting away, there will be less fans not more. and the new hockey won't keep the new fans because the one thing they fear, i.e. uncalled for violence, is what they will have on the ice. I can't remember when I last saw a spear but if the guys can't fight, spearing, slashing will increase. If Bettman listens to polls then fighting will be here to stay. why? Because NBC had a Sunday game and did a poll where more fans wanyed fighting to stay.

i definetly agree if they put a ban on fighting there will more then likely be a lot more retaliation then if you let a couple guys fight but i can understand it a little bit cause they dont want to see someone get badly hurt in a fight but if they are willing to drop the gloves then they have to be willing to live with the consequences and if they ban fighting there would be alot more dirty hits retaliations cheap shots if you let the players police themselves alot less likely for someone to get hurt really badly by a cheap shot or someone trying to get even for a hard hit on their star player doesnt seem to me that having fighting hurts anything always seemed to be a part of the game to me

Or its even better to take out the frustration on the other team when they are beating you coz you can't handle it.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIF1QMtT5do
