Monitoring a project

I am working on several projects. Though I am a Functional Manager and in our organization as everywhere else Project Managers are different from the Functional Managers, I have always found that if we take our project as one and monitor it on a regular basis, that would be better. More than the tool it is the attention we give to our part of the activities that gets a project through. But then at a company-wide level we use mainly Primavera a project Management Software which generates the NetworL and CPM detail. The corresponding the local monitoring at our unit level is done by making Excel Tables of the various constituent activities and monitoring the progress of wach of tis activities. Like I ma in an Engineering Activity. For our Engg Activity to begin we need certain inputs to come from another division of our conpmany. They are another Engineering Group at slightly higher level of consolidation. We rae the Detailed Engineering for our so called Project Engineeing Management Group. The Inputs form them form the basis of our output. So a list of the Receivable Input Documents (From this group) is made and we dovetail our own output documents to our customer and our manufacturing shops in the form of dates entered aginst the documents in what is called as an Engineering Review. Similat such Excel files exist for the "scene" on the project as seen by the other functional group. This has been very effective and we have been very successful.

will monitoring is the best tool to monitor..for update and progress of a certain project.in this manner we can update our self even if were not in the site.
