Hey,
For laptops at the moment, I would recommend Core 2 Duo, they go just fine. But now, Intel have come out with Intel Core i7 which kills any processor out there.

Quad-core is overkill and more unstable. I would just stick with dual-core as it's the most stable and is more then enough for most people.
HP Dual-core, with about 4GB of ram should do ya' just fine. P.S. laptops are incredibly hard to upgrade just to let you know.
The more fans the better, and you can get a cooling pad(i'm not sure if that's the correct name.) that you stick under your laptop, and getting a real fan constantly blowing towards your laptop while you're on it helps as well. Another tip to help you out would be to try to not cover up the bottom of the laptop completely. Let it be able to vent, so to speak.
Enjoy, and g'luck!

I never try to use laptop by keeping on bed or on a cloth because it will close all the air holes at the bottom i always use laptop by keeping on a table.

To my knowledge Core Quad is the best processor currently available and as far as i'm aware Dell do a range of laptops which incorporate this processor into the package. Presently Core 2 Duos have been the hottest processors about but Quads have taken over and are supposed to be faster although i've never used one so feel I can't comment too much on this.
