How do you embed links?

I prefer GMail over Yahoo Mail because of the mail thread feature3 and the labels - makes it easier to get organised. However, I can't seem to find a button to embed links in GMail. Besides running GMail on Thunderbird, would you know how to embed links in an outgoing mail from GMAil?
