Do you still see a sky full of stars these days?

I remember when I was a kid, star gazing was a perfect hobby for me. I can still remember those nights when the stars are almost full of stars, twinkling up there like sparkles of dusts. There are too many stars when I was a kid. But these days, when I look at the sky on nights when there are no clouds, there are always few stars that I can see. Have you seen a night full of stars in your area because I feel that stars are not being seen these days like before because of the pollution and too much gas up there.

I love the night sky and during childhood i would gaze at the sky often. I even bought a telescope many years later and through it i used to see the Moon craters, stars, planets, galaxies, nebulae etc. However since the last 15 years the city where i live has become polluted with dust and too much of light so the stars have virtually vanished. Even the Moon gets covered with clouds. I had to sell the telescope for this reason and also because many highrise buildings have come up cutting off the view of the sky. It is unfortunate and i feel very bad at being deprived of my beloved hobby.

I think that was a very good hobby veejay but it's sad that you had sold your telescope already. I haven't had any experience yet of using telescopes, especially stargazing. There's a place here in the Philippines, I heard, where stargazing is one of the attractions. I'm planning to bring my kids there if we have the time and money because tickets are expensive. I hope you find your hobby again and I hope it brings joy to you and all of us again.

Hi Marisriel!Yes,I still do see the sky full of stars here in our place.Though at times, there were oly few.But since before Christmas,my daughters and I were fond of star gazing. It started on 1st of December when the moon,Venus and Jupiter were so visible.Since my kids were bringing along our digital camera,we even captured a round object which others claimed to be an orbit. From then on up to new years eve,we still do see lots of stars and capture lots of orbits .

That is an awesome adventure teshavill. I never thought any planet is visible. What country are you in? I would love to see and point to my kids if ever there are planets that we can see.

Living in an urban area means you never get to see the sky as it is in remote regions, filled with billions of stars.
I moved from a big capital city to a small town, so I see more stars now, but there is still a lot of light pollution.
Last night I looked out the window and saw a very bright yellow light. I thought at first it was a helicopter hovering, but it was the evening star low in the sky shining brilliant and yellow.
I see the moon much more often, and more clearly too.

That must be great seeing that shining star. I don't even see the moon shining brighter than when I was a kid. I also remember seeing a moon so big you think it comes close to you.

Really, you have seen a meteor already? That must be awesome. I haven't seen one and I wish I'll see one with my kids. Meteors are shooting stars, right?

I dont know this is true or not. i feel we are just spoiling only our earth and its admosphere layers by the worst word pollution. Will this term could spoil the stars too......?

Hi romeo, i think we are still polluting our earth. The stars are too far up there for our wastes to get into. Maybe in the future when man will be able to reach the stars and inhabit there.

Thanks for reminding me about the constellations. I totally forgot about them already. You only get to see these amazing constellations when you see all of the stars shining brightly. How can I teach my kids these night lights if I don't see them at all. I wish I'd see the stars again. I hope this summer, months before the rainy days come, the stars will shine brightly here in my place.

You are correct. I see so few stars these days. Mostly I see the Venus (I think) and a few weeks back, I saw the conjunction of the crescent moon, the Venus/Mars and the Jupiter in a triangular shape and it waa an awesome sight. Apart from this, there are practically no stars up there for us…its mostly the pollution but here we have the high street lamps too and most of the time, the night sky is brightly lit up in a most eerie glow. Its difficult to spot any stars in this light. Its only if we ever go to some suburb area for the weekend that we can do some star-gazing from the terrace.

I love to star gaze. The sky is so fascinating when it is full of stars. I look for the big dipper, little dipper and just enjoy the sight. The sky is not as often as it used to be but there are still nights that I can sit and look at a skyful of stars and just wonder at them.

yes, I still see a lot of stars at night. I just saw them the other night after a week of heavy rains and thick clouds, it's so nice to see those stars again. But now, they've been hidden by those rain clouds again. :(

I've lived in the city all my life and I don't have a getaway or vacation house in the suburbs. Maybe when we get to go to the province sometime this year, I'll check if the sky will be greater than the city. But I'm pretty sure it is better on the suburbs because there's less cars and factories there.

I noticed that too. When I look up in the sky with no clouds, I noticed that there are no stars or there are few stars shinning above unlike before when I was still a kid we like to look at the sky and connect the stars to come up with shapes or images. It's true due to pollution and green house effect, we cant see the stars anymore even they are just there shinning down on us.

I have never really thought about it I guess, but you do make a valid point. I have not seen many stars in the sky for many years now. I guess all we can do is wait and see if they will ever show again.

That is good to hear. At least, there is still a place where stars do come out. I'll just satisfy myself with the glow-in-the dark stars on my kids' room.

Hi operator93, I would love to have a friend like that who is passionate about nature especially stars. They are the one who usually makes effort on really understanding these things and if they have a chance, they do something about these things. You must have learned a lot from your friend.

hi....
i think u r right to some extent. but may be u moved from some rural area to urban area, thats why u r getting away from sky and stars. or the ongoing fast development in our countries might be the reason for that.
