Yesterday I received a friend request here on mylot. The name was "****assasin". I didn't get a positive urge to accept it. I thought the name was too aggressive and it was the for solely this reason that I refused. Do you feel the same way too. Do you think a name has a lot to do as first impression if not anything else?

I know of the user you are referring to Daffodil. I don't care about their username really. Their activity within their profile will give me a pretty good indication of their personality. I form little or no first impression from a username only.

I too often read the discussions started by them but sometimes when you don't have enough time you tend to rely on your instincts.

You bring up an interesting topic. I have gotten friend requests before from people who have chose somewhat unsettling user names. For instance one person had made their user name a curse word, but they left out key letters so mylot censors did not pick up on it. But anyone with a brain could read what the person meant. I didn't even bother to check out their profile. I deleted the request. But if it is something just odd, maybe like assassins, I'll go check the profile before deciding. Heck, they might just like video games.

Thanks AmbiePam! Unsettling names are indeed......unsettling. So true. Curse word reflects the sadness of mind. lol. yes, thats a fair possibility. I never thought it that way. you are right. Video games!

My fiance's email id is a bit aggressive, but his id here is not. I will have to say that it is a bit... strange to see an id like this, and I have judged because of i.d.. Although it is also true that gamers use names like this because of the characters they play in their games. While the name might be rough, the person doesn't have to be.

That's there certainly. The name might be rough but the person otherwise. Thanks for the response.

In general the ID or nickname chosen by a person reflects his/her personality. It is a natural reaction for people to react to the IDs with certain impressions.
It does not bother me because sometimes people act tough on the Internet even though in reality they are softies. On the other hand there are violent or agressive people who use nice IDs. I accept requests not based on the ID.
all the best,

lol. you are right. They might be softies in reality. Hiding behind nice IDs is scary too. Thanks for the nice response rosdimy. All the best to you too.
