Hello Everyone,
We are all aware of the condition of our economy. I am just curious how it is affecting you. I was just notified late last week that my position will be eliminated effective 2/13/2009. Saturday when I went to the mall near my house, I was surprised to find that one whole wing of the mall had been closed off because of businesses that had closed or moved out. Despite these things, I am still very optimistic. I am taking the approach that this is an opportunity to re-invent myself. So how is the economy affecting you?

I also see a lot of store closing in the area. Sadly, they are almost all small businesses and many were unique. I'm also getting a reality check every time I go to the grocery store. I thought food prices were raised because of the price of gas but gas is down and they just keep skyrocketing.
As far as business is concered. I have to say it's pretty good right now. I'm a bookseller. I had an enormous shock in October when the business on Amazon went down by 2/3. Those were the books I had figured for recession proof. However, things picked up in November and strong sales have continued. I think the drop was because of Amazon's remodelling their web site. (At the start of the worst downturn since the Great Depression, they decided to slow things down & remodel!) Anyway, the real test will come with the rare and antiquarian auctions in the Spring. If they don't do well, I could be in some trouble but I'm still hoping for the best and I'll muddle through somehow even if things are really bad.

I just wanted to applaud your positive attitude. I think you are definitely on to something. It could prove a very good time for reinventing. More than one lost job has turned into a blessing in disguise. Let us know how things turn out.

What is an antiquarian auction? I love reading, and I prefer owning the books, but of course I have cut back on purchasing books too. I also have changed the way I buy groceries. I'm a lot more conservative. The trouble is, buying the unhealthy stuff is more affordable than buying what is best for the family. But I still believe things will turn around soon. I will certainly keep you posted.

An antiquarian auction is just one that sells old (pre 20th Century) books. I hope you buy your books at estate sales, thrift shops and library sales. That's where the dealers get them. They cost too darn much retail. It's amazing how many folks buy a book full price, read it once (sometimes they don't even read it) and immediately donate it someplace. They pay $26. We pay $1.
I know what you mean about the unhealthy stuff being cheaper. I conned myself into having a donut and coffee for breakfast every morning because it was so cheap and easy. Unfortunately, if I didn't stop, I was going to become a diabetic. lol

i lost my job too, i am living in china, and coming the chinese new year,
i noticed that there are so many people go shopping in supermarkets, no any sign that chinese people are facing one financial crisis, they all bought much for new year, and fireworks, that is the requisite commodity for festival, specially chinese new year. i also noticed that my some friend's bonus has been canceled, some factories like the ones relying on exporting, has bankrupted, great many farmer workers lost jobs, no choice but to go back their hometown,
anyway, it definitely affect our daily life much, i hope it recover as soon as possible, pray,,,,,,,,,

It is saddening to know that a lot of people are loosing their jobs, prices are soaring high, and businesses closes down. Economic crisis really affects us all- almost all overt he world. Especially us, from the third world country. But I am also optimistic that we can survive. Just have faith.

I work as a loan closer and have been watching my sector go from bad to worse to very bad for the past couple of years. We are trying to survive, but taking pay cuts, working fewer hours so I'm also trying to re-invent myself and try my hand at other options so that I can make a few dollars and get through these bad times. Hopefully they won't last too much longer. Have a great day.

That's sad. The economy has affected in a way too. Although, I may be one of the fortunate ones who are still able to hold on to their main jobs. However, because of budget cuts and all, the source for my extra income was cut as early as August of 2008. So for the past months now, I've been trying to make ends meet with just my salary from the main job. I'm still happy though that I am able to hold on to that.

I am not going to lose my job, but they are starting to cut our hours. I am supposed to be full time and was originally getting about 38 hours per week, now I am only getting scheduled for like 34 and they keep sending us home too. At least one person gets sent home early almost every day. I am currently looking for another job, but I've had no luck as of yet. I have a lot of friends that lost their jobs and are having a real hard time just trying to pay their bills. It's horrible. I am starting to sell some of my junk on the internet though. In hopes to clear the clutter and make some extra cash.

They are cutting hours at work and I am getting less and less money. However, I notice the economy really hurting us as far as utility bills and being able to pay for basic needs. I am not sure of how I will buy groceries this week as I have to pay the electric to keep it on and since that is our heat source, it is a high bill -over $200. I hate this!!

I'm so sorry to hear you're losing your job. My prayers go toward you that you'll find something soon again. It's kind of scary how the economy is effecting so many things...especially when you hear of major old established stores like Macy's closing many of it's stores...and Circuit City. I'm on SSI and do get food stamps but I've noticed that my food stamp benefits doesn't stretch out as it once did due to skyrocketing prices on food

Well at least you have a bit of notice. My Hubby works in a factory and when he went to work yesterday they announced "cutbacks" and his foreman got fired! No warning at all! Just WHAM! I think 3 or 4 people found that out yesterday. Hubby is pretty worried. He knows they also let a couple of the office people go. That sucks so bad to go to work and then get fired and sent home, this guy had been there at least 20 years, maybe more.
We have cut back almost as far as we can, the only other thing we can think of is to get rid of the Direct TV, but we are in a contract and will have to pay a pretty hefty fee to do that (like $400) so might as well keep it for now, only paying $39.99/month for it.
We do have 2 vehicles payments. Thought about selling my car, but things are so bad around here, no one has money to buy it. If he should lose his job, we just might let it get repossessed.

I am very sorry to hear that this is happening to you. It just makes me sad to see how many people are being affected. Although I may not be losing my job, I am a college student in grad school right now and it is just hard trying to make things meet. I have all these expenses, and my car is acting up and I don't have money to fix it or get a new one. I still haven't paid rent yet lol. The list goes on..I am just trying to have faith and know that things will work out anyway. It may not seem like it, but it will. I am very glad to hear that you are being optimistic about things.

I found out September 16, 2008, that I was loosing my job. As of now I am jobless my job ended 12/12/2008.
You are very fortunate because you have youth on your side and you have time to get another job and better your self. I am almost retiring age and I have nothing to retire on because society or the government or somebody has taken all of the retirement money I had. I don't have the time to start over. As of now all I can do is first trust in the Lord and take it one day at a time.
Good Luck and God Bless you.

I don't know if this is to do with the economy, but my daycare assistance has been decreased big time. I am trying to call and find out if there is a mistake. If i cant get reg. assistance then i will have no choice but to quit my job. I cant afford regular daycare prices working part time. I only hope that it can be fixed. I was real upset about it all weekend.

Sorry that you lost your job, I have yet to see any real effects here in Chile but I was quite poor anyway so I guess it canĀ“t get any worse for me. The good thing that has happened recently is that food prices have come down a bit, maybe because of the decrease in oil prices.
I was recently watching the news and they said that Chile is doing more business with China in order to shelter itself somewhat from the global economic slowdown, as China is the new emerging economy they have a great responsability to keep the world economy up and running.

Hello to everyone 2008 has been the worst year for us. work was slow all year and about October it dropped off compleatley. My husband is in construction. We have just about gone through our savings. If work doesn't pick up soon, I don't even want to think about it. I'm just thankful that all our children are grown now. Whats really bad is we are to young for retirement, but to old to get a good job. the few companies that are hiring are putting the younger people to work. Which is good because they need it to. I just keep praying for all of us to get through this.
