Do you really give to beggars?

You'll find them almost everywhere, especially in big cities here in the Philippines. I admit that I feel pity for them right away and it breaks my heart to see that there are people who had to beg inorder to live.
But some people have warned me about them being dependent on other people even if they are still capable of working, and that some would only beg inorder to smoke or drink, some are even victims of syndicates, and that if you give alms to those indigenous people we call BADJAOs they'll be following you around and crowding you until you're like sugar to the ants.
But God tells us that he blesses those who are generous. What is the most proper thing to do inorder to help these people?

here at my place not all beggars are beggars. some of them are just fake! so i don't really donate to them because i can't really tell who are the real beggars. and i know this sounds ridiculous but a study had shown some beggars to earn as much as a teacher in a month.

I generally give to beggars who perform something (like singing in public buses or telling jokes), as a part of their earning as they have entertained me (generally u know what they sing).
Apart from this I have tried another thing. Whenever a small boy or girl asks for alm, I ask them whether they are ready to work in my house as a maid or in my shop. To my astonishment most of them do not want to work.
I think that might help.

really? :-D well, do you give to those kids anyhow?
I learned that in manila, the capital of Philippines, giving alms to some street kids only indirectly support some syndicates or people who use children to earn money.

In HK, beggars are usually people who don't work or illegal immagrants form chna so i don't really feel sorry for them.
If they were old man or woman, they are given money to suppport themselves from the hk govenment. But not theillegal immagrants cos they're not supposed to be there.

I feel sorry for these illegal migrants too. I mean they are just looking for greener pastures but wanted it the easy way out that's why they suffer. But still my heart breaks when I hear about their stories.

I just give money to the old beggars who seems without working ability. Some beggars who are young and strong, aren't given because they could work to earn money instead depending on others.

Yes, i also find beggars everywhere now. i've ever given money to some beggars, cause i saw them looks really pitiful especially someone with their children. Sometimes i think, where and why will come so many beggars? Did they so difficult to find a job? i give money to them is good or bad for them? I will more appeal to society to help this kind of crowd, give them a better arrangement so that enable our society to have a better order.

I never give money to beggars. Or even food. Because once I gave my sandwich to some kids, they never ate it but threw the sandwich away because they were expecting money. Hence, they are not really begging for food but for something else. I have nothing against poor people, I grew up being poor also but being poor did not give me the excuse to be dependent on other people. I wish that the Catholic Church stops arguing about the reproductive health bill being passed as being anti-life. Because looking at all the beggars with their four or more children, what kind of life are they talking about? Of course, this is a separate issue, but going back to the issue, no I don't give money to beggars.

about the bill, anyway, I really can't say anything.
All I know is that, in the future, I don't want my kids to grow up feeling that I could never provide them with anything.
And for me birth control is not a guarantee that there won't be beggars anymore in the streets.
However, I think the issue on overpopulation still needs to be addressed AFTER they have addressed issues on corruption and people using their position to their own benefits, because for me that is one of the greediest roots of our poverty.

Dear friend,
I hardly give money to beggars, I do have given clothes, donations and food to charity institutions and poor people I could see that they are no other way to get them than through begging. I do hope giving money would encourage them to beg and more would turn to begging. May be they tend to be lazy even if they could do some work. But at times I had given when I see that they are reall in pathetic condition.

But when I go to Europe I never spend the coins I save them for the beggars expecialy the kids and the disabled I dont care that much what they do with the money so what if they have an ice cream or have a ride on the mery go round they are kids as well.

I have a hard enough time providing for my own family. We are barely surviving ourselves, so I don't usually give to beggars. When I do give some sort of donation, I prefer to give to the church or to missionaries...

this has always been a problem to me. Beggars are everywhere as well in Canada...especially in downtown. I used to give some monney when I see them occasionally however, I would see the same person there everyday. I mean i can help sometimes but not everyday. I even see young teens in the streets and they become vulgar if you don't give them anything. I even remember once when I waseating pizza and a beggar came to nag me for some monney. I can't even eat peacefully. Now, I don't give anymore. Monney is hard to earn and if someone just decides to be lazy and don't want to work, that person doesn't deserve to get monney. For people who has low income, the government gives enough monney for the daily need so the extra monney that person needs, she/he has to work out as long as it doesn't exceed a certain amount of monney in order to receive government help. I just get really pissed when it comes to beggars..

My husband always give to beggars in the street especially when it is traffic and someone will appraoch him. But, for me, i don't give beggars money because i beleive that you are only telling them to keep on doing the same thing all their life. Might as well, contact your local government and give feedback about that and maybe they will be taught on doing something to help them make a living.

The local government doesn't seem to care sometimes. It shows in how corrupt they are.

I try not to give money to them but instead I buy food for them This is much better for them.. Not like a full course meal. Just simple food such as bread, coffee, tea etc.

Yes, right. Because if you give them money, they may not use it for a good purpose.

I don't tend to give beggars money because honestly, God knows what they'll do with it and I don't want to be contributing to anyone's addiction when they already have enough problems. I do tend to give them food, however. For example, there is this homeless guy in Washington DC who always hangs out by the McDonald's where my Disability Rights group's hotel is near. He likes us. He says he eats really well when we're there because we'll always go in to buy stuff for ourselves and bring him something. That's sad but at least he eats well twice a year. It's actually pretty smart, if you're going to be homeless, to station yourself by a cheap food establishment. People will feel bad and buy you food.
At home, in Massachusetts, I have also been known to go in and buy something extra for a person in need when I am food shopping.

you have a very generous heart. That's a good idea, food instead of money. Hope they don't become dependent on you for food.

Yes I do. The country which I live in is known as Nepal and here you can see loads of beggars out in the street, I feel pity when I see beggars who do not have any arms or legs or are injured badly, I just give them a couple of money which is enough for them to eat. But I don't give to beggars who are healthy, if I do then they will become lazy and beg even if they have the ability to work. There are many people who just beg but not work even if they can. And I even heard that there are beggars who are made to beg for someone rich.

wow, you're from nepal? I have been attracted to your country because of Brad Pitt's movie before.
Is it true, though? That there are a lot of beggars too?

I wont give cash, but i have done a few things. i was in chicago and their was a man asking for money that did not have any shoes on. I found a good will and bought him a pair along with some socks, and here at home Their was a man standing on the street with a sign will work for food. I was on my way to the store. So i Picked up a few things that i thought he could use, and on the way back home i stopped and gave him a bag of groceries, it was not a lot but i know he was grateful because he started to cry when i gave them to him. We don't have a lot but i try to help when i can. If the economy doesn't pick up soon, we might end up their ourselves.
