Use of Helmet.

India

Hello friends, how many of you use a helmet when you are riding a two wheeler. The cumpulsory wearing of Helmet rule came to our state about 9 months ago. Earlier also, about ten years back. there was this rule, but later on it was abolished, but last year the High courts made it cumpulsory. Even though it is quite safe, and all other blah, blah, I am against wearing helmet, simply because our state is one of the hottest place, and in summer, when you wear the helmet, you start sweating and you end up with a headache. Even though it is against the law, I never wear a helmet even though I carry it, just to fool the police. Of course except some cops, the rest of the traffic police, just do not bother about it. Your responses on this.

Sudipta, in that way we are still lucky, that pillion riders are exempt from wearing the helmet. At times, particularly on a Friday or any auspicious days, the poor woman, who love to wear flowers in their hair, look at the flowers longingly, but are unable to wear it, because they have to use the helmet. In fact one of my friend who used to wear beautiful flowers in her hair, has stopped using them because of this.

HI, On a personal note I hate even wearing a Seat belt, seat belts are to ensure safety in gr8 speeds but hardly I can drive over 80 here in Bombay. The same goes for helmets too. Its more of a nuisance than a safety measure but ironically its true that it proves to be a life saver at times, I have a good friend of mine who was alive just bcause of the helmet he was wearin a helmet.Lol I even remember an incident when the rider met with a minor accident coz of the helmet. He was riding in during monsoon and to clear his vision he was wiping it with a piece of cloth and stumbled upon a ditch...lol..Happy riding

Hi Sanjana, i wd love to make a clarification here that it is not a question of me being a slow or a cautious driver, what i really meant was that here in Bombay-India there is so much of a heavy traffic that you cannot speed up.The cars move bumper to bumper. And if I am driving that slow then what is the need to buckle a seat belt. Thats what I meant in my earlier response. Thanks for getting a clear picture. Bye Bodhi

Hello,Ramesh! Here in Orissa the helmet use was made compulsory in the 80s but the two wheel riders did not obey the rule as late as 2008.In 2008 this rule was again imposed on the two wheel riders and the police imposed fines and seized the bikes who did not use the helmet.Yet about eighty percent of the bike riders never use the helmet in my city.thanx.

Hi Sanjana, nice to see the answers, to not only for me but also for all the others who have answered. As you can see, that the maximum number of people have mentioned that they hate to wear a helmet. It is not because that they do not want to disobey the law, but in India, the weather is such that once you wear a helmet and go some where and remove it, your entire face is completly full of sweat, and after some time the helmet also starts stinking. Not to worry, I have taken your advice and as well as the other mylotters who have advised me to wear a helmet. I am on the look out for a open face type helmet, and shall start wearing it as soon as I buy one. Cheers.

Hi RAMESH,from your disc I could guess that your are from TN, isn't it.Ya many people say that they have similar problems.I have seen many people keeping the helmet on the petrol tank while riding bike.Nowadays there are some high cost helmet available which comes in temperature resistant and feather weight.Try those ones. And whatever the safety measures you take, intially you should have control on the bike while riding it.If you have control even 160kph isn't a great mistake.
