First of all i would to greet you a nice day. The place to sell online your product is to create a website. In your website you can do web mail, you can do auto response mail. Even your not online and someone makes inquiry on your product your website will respond to it.
If you have any question regarding website making ask me and i will response to you.

eBay has it's "ProStores" and Amazon has "WebStores" that allow you to build your own website easily with their shopping cart, their payment processing so you don't have to have a merchant account etc but you have your own domain name like..
www. thisismystore. com
Amazons is $59.99 a month + commision on sales
eBay's is $9.95, $29.95, $74.95 or $249.95 a month depending on what level of store you want. Plus a per transaction percent for the payment processing. If you're an eBay seller as well selling through the eBay site then you can get a discount on the store.
As for the best place to sell otherwise, you didn't tell us what you're selling. Knowing that would help.

I think that amazon is a good idea
But the best is to get your own site I know you said that is was too complicated but there are places you can make websites very easy
If you are interested I can work on a site with you
I think thats the best way

I'm not sure in the UK but here in the us you could go to flea markets. It's where a bunch of vendors go to sell there goods to others. It may help with getting to know some people around your area. Also you can do craft shows usually they are held at churchs or schools. You usually can find the listings in your local paper.
But like I said these are for the US and I'm not too sure if you have them in the UK.
And I know setting up your own website is hard. But you can always start off with a blog and let the people know around you what you sell and such. IT's definately a way to connect with people.
