Hi mylotters,
I was wondering if any of you have had first hand experience with Depo Provera. I'm 22 and want to get on birth control. I know there are all sorts of pills but my doctor told me about the shot as well. He told me there are two. One which can be taken once a month by the name of Mesigyna and then Depo Provera which is administered every three months.
He told me that the Depo Provera would be the better one for me to take cause it'll help me gain some weight (which I do need to do) and give me some extra shape and such in the process. Of course it stops your period too but he didn't seem to be all to concerned about that affecting me (which frankly I wouldn't mind either!)
Well I actually went to the doc for a checkup and I just asked him about going on birth control in the process. So we didn't go too deep into the topic. I do plan to go back specifically to find out about birth control and such but I have been reading up on Depo Provera and then I looked up some reviews by people who have used it and most of them seemed negative!
So I would like to find out if any of you have been on it yourself and did it agree with you?
I know everyone's body reacts differently...but after reading all this stuff I am a bit skeptical about starting it next month although my doctor recommended it.

Ive been on the depo shot since January of 08. I stopped having my period right away. Some girls still have it for a little bit afterwards but I didnt. As for the weight gain, that didnt happen to me, I actually lost weight since I started taking it. One of my friends was on it a few years ago and she also lost weight on it, but most girls do gain from it. And the main thing I like about it is that its only once every 3 months. I dont like taking pills and if you took them they have to be taken at the same time every day and with the shot you dont have to worry about if you miss a day or dont get it at the same time.

I've tried Depo Provera for 6 months.. It's injectable. One injection is good for 3 months. I bleed heavily for 2 months.. but according to my OB-GYNE it's normal. then a month of no period. I didn't gain weight, maybe because I'm taking care of my 2 kids. Stressed. But I eat a lot (I eat rice for breakfast, 2 plates of rice for lunch, with snacks, and 2 plates again for dinner.. Maybe because the calories burn fast. It's like you're pregnant because you're craving a lot of foods. Then I got injected again. I did not have a period for a month then bleed again for 2 months (but it's normal bleeding).. I can say that it's safe.

I had the Depo shot before and it was not good for me. I gained a lot of weight, I kept headaches all the time, and my hair started shed a lot. I did not have a period at all when I was on it. If I was you I will not get the shot because it has some serious side effects. I have also know other people who went through similar things as I did while on the shot. I am now taking Seasonique, it is a birth control pill and I have a period every 3 months which ends up being 4 times a year. I have not had any side efeects while taking it. If you want more information on it you can go to www.seasonique.com and read more about it.
