Who takes care of your pets when you go away?

What do you do with your pets when you have to go away? Do you take them with you? Do you send them to your family? Do you put them in a boarding kennel? Do you have a neighbor adult come in and feed them? Walk them? Do you ask a neighbor kid to do it? Do you just put down extra food and water and put them out back and hope for the best? Do you hire a professional pet sitter? I can't think of any other options, but there might be some. I'm a pet sitter. Sorry I can't work in your area. It's a really local job. I only cover 4 kilometers which is my whole town. Pet sitting is the most rewarding job I know. It's hard work dealing with the difference personality's of various pets. It takes a lot of animal knowledge to be able to come in and walk any dog. Especially since many are not always fully trained to heal on the lead. Some dogs bite. You need to be able to red the signs before it happens. Some dogs attack other dogs or cats. Again you have to recognize and stop it from happening before they lunge. There is a down side. I've been bitten, scratched, peed on etc. It's part of the job. I don't care. I also have to go out even if it rains or is freezing or my back is killing me. Being sick is not an excuse. You have to show up even if you are running a 106 fever and should be in the hospital. The only excuse for not showing up is being dead.

We have two cats and two chihuahuas. When we've gone on vacation, we leave the cats at home and take the dogs with us. For the cats, we have several food and water stations. Thankfully they prefer dry food. We also get several disposable litter pans, in addition to the two that we have. They seem happy to be left, and they've never run out of food or water. All the extra litter pans can simply be thrown out. Traveling with the two dogs is fun, both love to ride in the car. We usually plan trips around visiting friends and family, but we've also stayed in hotels with them. All Holiday Inns accept pets, and more and more hotels/motels are doing the same.

I want a Chi. T have a client with a 16 year old Chihuahua. It is a great dog. It is the only dog I sit for that doesn't need to be leashed for going outside. She can barely walk. I carry her to the middle of the yard and she does her business then slowly walks back to the house. That's her exercise for the day.

They make excellent pets. Nice thing about having them is that they usually travel well, don't eat much and no matter how small your home is, they think it's BIG. The one in my avatar is going to be 10 in March. The highlight of her life (other than pizza night) is barking at other dogs from the safety of the car when we're out for a ride. If you decide to get one, there is one thing to look for. The shape of the head has a lot to do with behavior and characteristics. There is what is called 'deer head' where the top of the head is flatter. This is actually the older form of the breed. They are much calmer, and in my opinion, smarter. The other is what is called 'apple head'. These dogs have a much rounder dome on their heads, and are in demand because of that feature. However, they are more apt to be tempermental and have that characteristic shake/shiver. I certainly am not an expert, but having one of each type, the 'deer head' one is smarter and the 'apple head' one is cuter (in a dumb blonde sort of way). I'll probably get a lot of flack for saying that...lol.

Hello, I know it can be difficult having pets and going on holiday and it is often easier to sort out cats rather than dogs because they dont mind being alone. I think it is a good thing that your cats dont mind being left because then they arent distressed. However, I was always brought up told that we should treat our pets the way that we would treat our children.....on a general level though. You wouldnt leave a child alone for a week or more whilst you went on holiday even if they could feed themselves simply because of all the other things that might happen. What if your home were to have a fire? It is against the law to leave a pet for that length of time too....so what if you were reported and the animal rescue break into your home? It is a responsibility that you have to consider before you get any animals as to what to do with them when you go on holidays or vacations......you cant just leave them alone.

I have someone come to the house to take care of them. Usually it is a family member that they know and that will spend some time with them. When my brother does it he takes the dogs out for rides and buys both the dogs and cats treats. The last time he even stayed overnight with them so they wouldn't be lonely. I don't think they even missed me.

If they have someone to take them out on rides and sleep with them they must be happy. LOL They get spoiled.

I never go away! I have 30 cats and don't care to go some where where I'd have to worry about them, like on a vacation or a weekend retreat. I like staying home! If in the future I'd have to be in the hospital for a long stay or something, then I'd have to worry about my cats but for now, I am not worried!

You can go away if you have a really good cat sitter. I have a client with 22 cats and 1 dog. It was 22 at last count. I don't know what it is today. Some cats are inside only, some are outside only and some go in and out. Plus she has a room upstairs with 3 cats who need to stay alone because they need special care. They all different diets and needs. One even needs her bladder expressed 2x a day. I take care of all of them.

When we are planning to go away, we take our dog to our local vet and have them board him while we are gone. I know they will take good care of him.

I have two cats. When my husband and I got married, we had one cat and left her at my husband's Aunts house. We went camping once for four days, and had our landord come up to feed and give water to them. We soon realized that they can take care of themselves very well, so when we go away, we will now leave them alone. I set up big bowls of water all over and food, usually they are so mad that we went away, that they hardly eat much. We always leave the TV on for them and a light, if it is in the summer, we will leave the AC on too. We will call periodically so they can hear our voices over the answering machine, I don't think they really care, but we do it anyway.

Cats can take care of thematics, but I would worry about something happening. I'm a worry wart. I used to call my cats too. In the states I had an answering machine that I could cal the house and actually listen to what was going on in the house. It was so cool.

We just have two cats and they seem to practically hibernate when we leave. If we go away for a week then my Mom pops in 2 or 3 times to make sure everything is OK and that's about it.

When I went away for the Christmas Holiday I hired a pet sitter to cat sit my babies. I am new to the area so I don't have any friends or family to look in on them and I hate the idea of a kennel--it would stress poor Ashley out, and just thinking about the diseases they could catch give me chills. Plus it was more expensive than the pet sitter. The lady that sitted for me did a wonderful job. I have thought about doing that, but I am unsure how to get started and can you really make a living doing it? It seems to be very in demand in my area--I called like six sitters before I found one.

You can make a living if you have a large client base. It isn't an easy job. You also need to be able to drop your personal plans if an sit from a client comes up unexpectedly. It is also one of those jobs were clients pick you based on how much they like you. I'm very well known in my small town and have a great relationship with the vet who gives me references. People as them about me. I'm at the vet a lot and meet many prospective client there.

One time, when I had The Doctor and he needed pills, I hired a pet sitter. the former roomie was out of town, I was having to go out of town as well and while I might've asked a friend to feed the dog and cats (we had 5 or 6 at the time) I wasn't going to ask them to pill The Doctor. Oh, I might've for a night or 2, but I was gone more like a week, and that also meant litter boxes needed tending and mail She even offered to water plants - like I have any plants that need it. I was very happy with her job. Having said that, we thought we were going to need a sitter last May because now we have 3 dogs in the house and 2 can't be allowed to be together (more a problem with training of the owner of the 3rd dog and getting them back together than anything else) but since she won't do the work to get them together again.... However, at the last minute, she decided to stay home. Now, after Hobo became diabetic, I thought I would need a sitter, but on one weekend, he stayed at the vet for testing and the other times I had a friend who also has a diabetic cat, and she came over and gave him shots. I've done the same for her as well. If I needed to, I would again hire a sitter. For example, I thought I was going to need a sitter because the roomie and I were going out of town for a week and the former roomie couldn't do the work to keep up the dogs and cats. But we happened to have a friend who needed a place to stay while she looked for a permant place at exactly that time, so we lucked out again. Now, when I used to go out of town for a weekend and only had 5-6 cats, I would fill up their bowls with food and water, give them clean boxes. then I would find a friend who could stop by and feed the dog, or even if I couldn't we'd give her a really good feed on Friday and then feed her as soon as we got back on Sunday. She lived to be 16 as a mostly outside dog, so she did pretty good.

Actually, the roomie's folks have a problem with their Great Dane, he won't take the pills. He'll roll the food until he can spit that little pill out!

Pilling a cat is hard. Some cats are a real pain to pill. Pilling dogs is so easy it's a joke. "Here baby want a treat?" Scarf, gobble, glug, pant pant; big sad you never feed me eyes; more please. Please please please. Giving shots is really no big deal. I've given tons of shots to animals.

I think pet sitting is an awesome job. I would love that kind of job. Anyway we have to frogs, one Chihuahua dog, and a miniature gerbil. We have never been anywhere (like vacation or anywhere for more than a couple of hours)so we haven't had to have anyone take care of our pets. And our dog is so attached to us I don't think it would be good to leave her.

My dogs also hate being alone. If I'm on vacation for more than 1 or 2 days they go to a really expensive boarding kennel. They pick up and deliver because many people in my country don't have cars. I want my pets to be happy and well cared for. I haven't actually seen the kennel, but friends have and say it's really clean and the animals are very well taken care of. I am planning a trip to se the kennel. It's on a famous kibbutz that gets a lot of tourists. I have seen 2 of the kennels in my country and I wouldn't leave a pet bug there. One was small and had really nice good people but was barren and the dogs didn't have enough shelter. The other was dirty and smelly. Yuck.

I went on vacation a couple of years ago and was gone 14 days. I had two of my dogs boarded at a local kennel, where I was able to supply their food and instructions. As well as their dog beds and toys. My littlest chihuahua Abby stayed with my Mom and she also cared for my cats while I was gone. Before I had dogs when it was just cats, if I was only gone a few days I could put out enough food and water for them and they would be fine. But that doesn't work with dogs. I've often thought of being a pet sitter, but I don't know this town very well. Maybe in my next place I can think about it there. I love animals, and would enjoy doing something like that I think.

I actually have two chis right now. Poco (male) and Abby. But when I was away I left my male with my german shepherd I had at that time at the shelter. Those two boys were best buddies. Poco sure misses Shiloh our shepherd. We had to have him put to sleep in November due to health issues. But little Abby is too much of a dainty princess to ever stay happily in a kennel. LOL They are cute little dogs, but a real pain to house train thats for sure. My stepdad has two (from same litters as my two) and he hasn't had much luck with house training either.

We have a neighbor that feeds our dog even if we are home. She loves animals so she will take treats to our outside dog. Sometimes my husband will go out to feed our dog and the neighbor has already done it. So we usually ask her to watch our dog if we go out of town. Now we have another little puppy so we'll probably ask her to watch her too or we could take her with us because she is small. The big dog outside is just too hard to get in the car with all of our things plus a child so we usually don't take her. If I don't get the neighbor to do it then my husband's grandmother will come and do it for us. I also have an aunt and uncle that dog sit too so I could ask them if I needed to. My neighbor and husband's grandmother usually do it for free for us so that's really nice.

I was going to refer you to my discussion of how that happened, but it seems to have disappeared... Anyway, Harmony used to live at my friend's just down the street. At the time, my friend's daughter lived there too. One day the daughter brought home a new kitten, and Harmony was none too pleased. She demonstrated her displeasure by peeing all over the house (typical cat response). My friend threatened to get rid of her. I said I'd take her. Harmony heard me say it, and the next day she came over and asked to come in. On her own.

I know it must be hard work especially, as you say, when you are unwell; a bit like motherhood, but what a great job! I adore animals especially cats and I have four: one dog, two cats and a bird. When we go away we rely on a good boarding kennel, it costs a small fortune but this way I can leave them and feel they are all taken care of properly. My parents take the dog and the bird sometimes so we only have to board the cats. Last time we travelled to the other side of the country we were away for 2 weeks and the boarding cost us as much as an extra plane fare which annoyed my husband but I don't care my animals are worth every penny!
• Israel
25 Jan 09
Knowing that you pets are well taken care of is worth every penny. That's why people pay me. I just got an email from a client that she might go away in a few week. She checks way in advance to see if I can sit for her pet.

My pets hate the kennel but I don't feel comfortable leaving them at home by themselves if I am going away for a longer period of time than an weekend. My dogs always go to the kennel. If I'm making a weekend trip, I leave my cats at home with plenty of food and water. Pet sitter? I'm not that comfrotable with it. I had a friend that hired one and when he came home from vacation he learned that the sitter never showed up and his poor cat hadn't eaten in days.

OMG That is horrid. I always show up even if I'm sick. Most pet sitters show up and do what they are supposed to do. You always need to get references to make sure it's a responsible person.
