That is it okay to slander on TV? I was watching part of the Mentalist a few nights ago and it was an episode that invovle a woman who claimed she was Wiccan. I want to know why it is this religion is one of the only ones that it is (in public opinion) okay to slander? They totally got it wrong. They talked about the lady casting killing or binding spells. A real Wiccan would do no such thing. As we believe that we should do no harm and both of those are harmful. Plus, I have always hated that I cannot wear the symbol of my religion, the Pentagram, because it is automatically associated with evil when it is not. Do you ever feel like your religion is slandered? Why it is that people are incapable of respecting other religions?

Well in many ways you can thank the "media" in general for still portraying witches in a negative sense, even when they are SUPPOSED to be Wiccan. Lets face it "evil" sells better than good, and how many people are going to watch a show or movie about "good" witches...it's been fed into the mind-set of people that all witches are evil and this is thanks to the propaganda of the church itself. The only movie that comes to mind that showed witches in perhaps a more positive light was Practical Magic, yet even they got it wrong as the two aunts were asked to do a love spell, and as part of the ritual had to kill a dove,...which as you know is against our principles since it's in the Wiccan Rede never to harm anything. As for binding spells...well, the many books I have on Wicca their usually is some kind of binding spell but only to be used in extreme cases. As for wearing a pentagram...I wear one..LOL. Frankly couldn't care less what people think of me..if people can wear crosses or star of David, then I see absolutely no reason not to wear a symbol of my religion --you could always wear a pentagram hidden under your shirt or blouse if you feel uncomfortable about openly wearing one

I've been considering converting to Wiccan. I never got baptised anyway into any religion as my mother was of the belief that I should be able to choose once I was an adult. Not be forced into a belief before I understood it.
And quite frankly, I have never found ANY religion that suits me yet. But I have a girlfriend nearby that I have been friends with for around 10 yrs. She is a sweet, kind person and would never hurt a fly. She has 2 very small children and told me she decided to be Wiccan a couple of years ago and would include me in her Coven, if I was ever interested. She has invited me to a few celebrations so far, but I haven't partaken yet. But I am certain that I will, at the very least to find out if it interests me. But first I wish to do my research. I do not jump into anything without doing research.

How very modern of your Mother. Must be nice to be given a choice. A good book to read if you are considering converting to Wicca is Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner by Scott Cunningham. I think you have the right idea about researching a religion before becoming involved in it. It should match the beliefs you have--you shouldn't have to match your beliefs to the religion. Good luck with your research and may you find your correct path.

Thank you so much for that information.
If there are any other sources of information you think I could use, feel free to share them with me.

You know, I've never met a Wiccan in real life (outside the internet) that I could take seriously as a person. They have all been kind of flighty or stoners. I'm not saying that to offensively generalize, maybe those are the exception and not the rule... but if I took all the people I've met that are Wiccan, I can't imagine a single one of them taking any action against discrimination, etc.
