I have heard there are a lot of stores in the States that are going into bankruptcy because of the recession. Now I live in Canada, and I read that Sears in the States might go into a financial downturn and possible bankruptcy at the end of the year. I tried to look to see if any Canadian stores or the Canadian Sears, are going into bankruptcy, and I just got articles on "how does bankruptcy work in Canada' except for the Nortal fiasco.
So is there anyone here who can give me a straight answer. Is Sears Canada in danger of folding? And if so, should I rush and spend my gift card right away?

I cannot speak in anyway for Canada but in my own country, recession is just beginning. Our dollar slipped nearly 8 dollars against the US dollar from last week. so panic is settling in. I think that the governments in mnay countries do not tell us what is really happening and what to expect.
Yes, maybe sears is going under so get out there and spend you rgift certificate. We have to develop coping strageies as this crisis is world wide. The U.K. officially announced its recession today. 300,000 jobs lost in London alone. so rush out and spend it wisely. Blessings

WOW, I thought that the Canadian and the American dollar were considered equal right now. They were this summer at least. I'm shocked to see such a difference again!!

Its true some stores are going out of business...Sears used to be a very good store but since K-Mart bought them out, they are one of the sorriest stores around anymore...I think selling out to K-mart was a drastic mistake but maybe they had to do that..I really do not care if Sears does go belly up,because Sears is not Sears anymore...They sell bad merchandise & they also do not stand behind their products any longer....I know the apartments i live in has purchased applances from Sears to put into these apartments & they are always broken..The little guy that came out to fix the dryer also told me that the Sears we always knew & loved is now just a dump anymore...

I do not know whether K-Mart bought Sears here in Canada. I do know that here they concentrate mainly on appliances, clothes, and utensils, and electronic stuff and do not have as good a selection as they used to. If Sears Canada is independent, then we will be okay, but if it is the same as it is in the States, I'm sunk. We have not brought any Sears appliances, just from the other companies, but my son has and he has not told me of any disasters yet. But he has not been in his place long.

Well we bought a chain saw from Sears, and it cost a little over $200.00 on sale..Anyway when we tried to use it,the thing would sling oil out,so we took it back within about a week or two..Wel they said they fixed it,so the second time we tried using it , it was still slinging out oil,so we took it back..They called us to say it would cost $79.95 to fix it...I said well it was bad from the start & we have only had the thing like 3 weeks ,and you supposs to have fixed it but its doing the same thing,so they said well it will cost you to get it fixed..Well i did NOT understand WHY we had to pay when the thing never was right..So i got so angry i took the thing back ,with the reciept but they would not take it back or give us our money back,so i said "Here take it,and sell it to another sucker" & i left it at the store ,and just lost all my money on it...So i do not shop at Sears anymore at all....I do remember when Sears was so upstanding & stood behind their items and took pride in what they sold, that was then and now they are sorry..I remember when you would buy a took at sears & if it broke , replacement was free, well no more..So later i found K-Mart had bought them out .....So i just totally do NOT go there anymore......

I guess I have to get an extended warranty from the original manufacturer. We had to do the same thing when we bought stuff from Futureshop, but at least they told us that from the beginning.

We have a rule here in Canada that gift cards are not limited, except that in Sears, they give up one year to buy something.
What I want will cost about four hundred dollars plus tax and I have a one hundred dollar gift card, and another twenty-five one that is for the whole Mall, so all I have to do is to save the money for the rest. That means I will have to go without buying anything for the next month or so and I think I can do it. So I hope Sears lasts longer than that.

even if they go bankrupt, they accept the gift cards right up until it closes. Sears closing is news to me. I hope it isn't true. Maybe they are just closing a few stores.

I know of no plans to close any Sears stores in Canada, so don't worry, no rush to spend your gift card.
Also, I don't know where you live, but even if you live in an area that only has one Sears store and should by chance it ever close, you have all our catalog assortment to choose from plus our website. Lots of options, so no need to hurry. If you hear any differently, it's a rumor.

Both sales and more importantly PROFIT are up so I see why there is no reason for it to go under. I also checked a couple more sites to see if I could find any news and nothing came up... search under their ticker symbol
SCC.TO (TO for Toronto Exchange)
Thanks

Hi suspenseful,
I have no idea about this but read also recently about the closing of Macy in some of the state here in the USA!
This is so sad thinking that a lot of people will be losing their jobs!

They are apparently closing quite a few stores in Canada but when I find articles listing the locations, the story can't be found. I suggest you call them. It's awful that they are closing so many around North America but at least we'll get some good sale items. I'll not be buying anything I don't need, though, not things I just want because this means money will be tighter than ever!
