You live with dignity, why not die with dignity?

Another MyLotter recently lamented that life is meaningless because we work, work, work.. and then die. What's the point? I argued that being able to plan our death in the same way we plan our life would give life and death more meaning. In the autobiography of my life, I should be able to write the conclusion. What if I could? What if I reached a certain age and decided, "OK, that's been a great life. Now I'm going to have a huge party to celebrate all I've done and the people I love, and then quietly go away and die." If you could, would you want to choose when and where you die?
Here's an interesting article on a couple that did just that: http://www.citypaper.net/articles/011002/sl.loose.shtml
And another about a society that helps people who seek this type of thing: http://www.compassionandchoices.org
What are your views on assisted suicide as a dignified way of ending your life?

With medication, there is no reason why people die wihtout dignity in today's world. Gone are the days where people die in agony from cancer or something. I believe that adequate pain medication should be made available to a person in pain yes, but to assist them to die? No, I do not believe in this. God gave us life and God takes it away. having said that I have told my children not to keep me on life support if there is not any hope for me as then it is my time to go. The word is love
