There are a number of things that stop you crying whilst slicing onions. I find that it's most effective if you slice them on something rather lower than the normal kitchen counter. You should also have air movement from your back so that the onion gases are taken away from your face. Some people say that lighting a candle on the far side of you from the onions helps - it creates an updraught that takes the gases upwards. Some others cut the onions under water.
I have also heard that chewing gum, a piece of bread or a sprig of parsley works. I think that has something to do with the way that chewing affects our eyes or face but I don't know.

Chilling the onions stops them from producing so much irritating gas and using a sharp knife means that you are not bruising the cells so much. It's when they are bruised that the gas is released more.
The cold spoon in the mouth is a new one to me but must be the same effect as chewing something.

I hear that if you keep your mouth closed while you're chopping an onion you'll be less likely to cry. This sometimes works for me. In truth, I don't have a whole lot of trouble with onions, although I use them a lot in my cooking. A bag of onions I bought a couple of weeks ago, was very strong and no matter what I did my eyes were messed up when I was using them!

I actually do not cry when cutting an onion... my eyes go shut and will not open so it is good to cry.
But the question was how not to cry and the answer is to do it (cut it) as fast as you can (use an electric cutter if you can) and this will help not to cry!
Thanks
Zelo

In the past I even tried to wear glasses when I was cutting the onions. But I was still tearful:) I have heard people said that put the onions into the freezer and then cut it after that will be helpful. Or you can cut the onions in the water so that you will not cry any more.

One thing I do is only cut one end off of the onion cut it when it has the skin on or take the skin off and run it inder cold water for a min before chopping it..that helps....littleowl

Try placing the onions in water a few hours before peeling them. Wearing a sun glasses might help you to prevent your eyes from crying.

Well I have tried so many methods to prevent crying but the only thing that I have found that works 100% of the time.
.... get someone else to cut the onions. :)

I love onions but they make me cry every time I am working with them while preparing to cook them too. I usually cut them up a little bit and then walk away and then go back to do more to avoid the crying and teary eyes.

Hello bombshell! Well, I think all I can say have it refrigerated. I am not really that good at the kitchen but when I tried to slice onions too, it made me cry so I asked some tips to my aunts.
