What is so important about the 2nd Amendment

A young lady on hub pages brought up the subject of gun rights on a hub that had nothing to do with it. I tried a short response but that got more questions. I gave up and wrote this hub http://hubpages.com/hub/What-is-so-important-about-the-2nd-Amendment
I've also written articles on the lessons of Mumbai and the reasons for the 2nd amendment elsewhere but, I continue to find people who just don't understand it and are learn to much from the anti-gunners. What are soem of the myths you've heard and how do you rebut them?

What I want to know is why are people so focused on taking away this right?
It all goes along with stripping all your rights away from you, one by one. Particularly this one so you won't even have a way to defend yourself against anyone, including the government it it so happens they get a little too big for their britches.
If this isn't the reason, what is?
