What scared you as a kid?

A friend of mine often talks about being terrified of her dad's glass eye! He used to sleep with his fake eye open and whenever she had to go into his room and he was asleep it would freak her out! It got me thinking; what scared you as a kid? Monsters? The Bogey Man? The dark? For me it was after watching a movie about a dead body arising from a bathtub; I could not enter the bathroom on my own especially at night. It took me years to get over it! Please share, what made you afraid as a child?

hi paula, My childhood fear was thunder storms, something which I have never quite outgrown. I was a child camping with my parents when a terrible thunder storm approached. My brother and I were sleeping in the tent at the time when suddenly the tent collapsed on us. My mom and dad managed to get us both safely to the car and as we waited for the storm to pass i did nothing but shake..oh i was so scared! I don't think the fear is quite as bad now but i do feel myself tensing up a little when there is a storm in the area. I just try to keep myself busy and try not to let it bother me. ~proudnana~

I can imagine that one would stay with you. Funnily enough I never had a fear of thunder only things that go bump in the night! Thanks for the response!

The ghost in my parents' house used to freak me out. He would stand at the top of the stairs watching me when my parents were not at home. All backlit so I couldn't see his face. Always at the top of the stairs too. scared me. I hated to be alone in that house....

I was extremely scared of my mom, her angry eyes and we sisters used to succumb to that anytime. It required just an eyeing and we had had it! We still are at awe with her. But then. that's more out of the kind of personality she has - indomitable that is. And also, I used to fear the cops very much. Even the sight of a uniform person would freak me out. I was docile as a kid and that I suppose explains it all. And coming to your fear, I still have visions, specially after watching a horror movie at bight and when I am all alone at home. I prefer not to watch one though.

My mom is a sweet heart now and even though she is not popular among kids she is a hit among youth.

My mum was pretty scary too; she used to yell a lot with a deep angry voice. She was not the best mother in the world. I feared the workmen fixing the roof on the building opposite our fifth floor apartment. Mum used to say that they would take me away if I was naughty so when the poor guys would smile and wave at me I would run and hide in fear!

It should not be like that , there are many ways to tell the kids but most parents suggest this method make the kid scary so do you agree this one. what do you suggest to them?

I am scared of father and his black belt. That is why I turned out to be a somehow some kind of an obedient child. And till now, I am still afraid of father but not to his black belt anylonger.

I am thankful that father raised me in such a way, if father was not strict I could have grown into a in a negatively manner.

I hope my daughter doesn't grow up fearing me; I doubt she will if her present attitude is anything to go by! Years ago it seemed acceptable for parents, especially fathers to be intimidating and strict. It's sad, I think. Thanks for responding!

Black cats. I remember having one jump out at me from out of nowhere when I was about 5, and I screamed like crazy. Now, I think they're the cutest things ever. =P

Funny you should mention black cats. I have one, a beautiful boy named Friday. My Dad has always hated black cats because he is very superstitious and firmly believes they are bad luck. When we adopted a black cat he was horrified! I just love my cat and I don't think he is unlucky at all. Having one jump out at you when you are 5 is pretty scary. Thanks for your response!

I love black cats now. My neighbor has this super-friendly black cat...he actually acts more like a dog. He'd go up to strangers, nudge at them, and lick their hands.

I used to fear that too. Our back door was glass and I could not go near it at night. I no longer fear this one, but I always remember when I walk past a window at night time. Thanks for the response!

I had a wonderful friend that put a story into my head about a banshee and hauntings. She felt it her duty to let me know about it after I moved into a house about a half mile away from hers in the country. She said that there was this banshee that haunted the area where she lived and I now lived and the only way to ward off the hideous creature was to sleep with your arms and legs crossed. So I tries to sleep that way but if I would awake through the night and realize that I was no longer in the everything crossed position I would totally freak out imediatly return to the crossed way and then keep my eyes peeled watching for the banshee to apear in the hall way outside my door sometimes all the way up until morning. I had alot sleepless night got in alot of trouble in school for sleeping in class. I think it took about 6 months or better to get over it and that was only after my so called friend finally confessed to me it wasnt true. I also used to have nightmares that were very similar to the move "Throught the Looking Glass" I was always stuck on the wrong side of the mirror.

God! God scared me terribly as a child. I was raised Catholic and all the stories of burning in Hell and sin, etc. scared me more than you can imagine. By the time I was 7 or 8 years old I pretty much felt I was doomed to the fire pit. After all, how many times can one be forgiven and the slate cleaned?

That's an awful to view God like that as a child! I was raised Catholic and I was taught the same and I must admnit I was quite convinced I was going to go to hell too, it's a shame. Thanks for responding!

Every kid has childhood fears and so did I. I was really scared of some unknown monster hiding either underneath my bed, closet or somewhere in the basement. i gradually out grew these scary things, but like everything else the memory remains.

Hi there! Thanks for responding. A glass eye is a prosthesis due the fact that my friend's dad lost his eye in an accident, pretty freaky I assure you. I don't mind mascots; they are just goofy to me. Have a nice day too!

I guess everyone have some respective fears on something or on somebody. I have mine too and my biggest fear before was sleeping in the dark; I can't sleep w/o lights at all; I felt soffucated and cannot breath if I cannot see even a little beam of light. And if I woke up and it's dark, I'll scream until mom put on some lights. I have this fear for quite a long time and it really bothers me specially when I went to college where I have to stay in a rented boarding house as bed spacer where I was sleeping w/ two or more room mates. There my problem starts because everybody is putting off the lights when sleeping. At first it took me a couple of weeks to adjust in that then I had an idea of lighting up a little imnprovised lamp so just to have enough lights. From then I learned to sleep w/o lights regularly until now. I overcome that fear.

As a parent I am very careful in regards to saying things like that to my daughter because, just like yours, my parents have frightened the daylights out of me with silly comments that scared me and just don't seem to go away. Thanks for the response!

What scared me the most was the fact that I am all alone. I always thought that my mother never loved me and thus I was scared that my family will leave me one day. Though it was all crab but still this was my fear about.

I remember a guy living a few doors next to us. Whenever he would see me he would say something like "I will eat you... mmm" That usually scared me. Now that I am older I kinda understand the guy but on the other hand it doesn't look like something a probably 25 year old should be doing.... :x The only other thing I can remember was a door in our apartment. As funny as it might sound, I thought that a ghost or something like that was living in it because there were times when I literally touched the door and couldn't move. And for some odd reason I thought that I even heard something like a voice. Or it was just my imagination, but yeah. Those were the two things that scared me the most during my young years. Not like I would be that old now anyway :)

Well I think she has right to be afraid of her dad's glass eye, it is a bit impressive. Well I used to get afraid of monsters whcich I saw on the TV. I will sure try not to move from bed at night, imagining that someone is under my bed.

I used to always worry about someone being under my bed. Even now I don't feel comfortable if I have an arm or a leg hanging over the edge of the bed! It stems from my childhood and being scared of a person hiding under the bed and grabbing me! Some things you just don't get over I guess. Thanks for responding!
