Yes, it is a sport...race car drivers have to be very physically fit. They perform in a very loud, shaky, hot environment for hours at a time wearing several layers of fireproof clothing, and gloves. They wrestle a steering wheel without power steering, They fight dehydration and heat stroke. Not to mention their lives are on the line every lap they turn.
For a good idea of what it would be like, wear a sweatshirt and sweatpants with sweater and jeans over top. Put on a motorcycle helmet and gloves, now get in the car and turn the heat on high and turn the radio up as far as it will go with the loudest heaviest metal music you can find, and go out find a bumpy windy road and hold your foot to the floor. Drive like this for 5 hrs without stopping to use the bathroom, and without wrecking.
That's what being a race car driver is like.
