They are trying to cut Art in the public school system. First it was Gym now it is art. What is going on?!? I guess we are aiming for Fat, Uncreative kids here in the USA. Do you agree with cutting Arts out of Public Schools? If so why? If you facebook - you can sigh a petition to stop this action - they need 500,000 signers - They were around 460,000 from the last I looked.

I think it is about how badly are school system is portrayed around the world. There are countless countries who put out educated children. I know that when my parents went to school in Russia they had a much better education than any of the kids today have. Also with the economy the way it is, they do not want to cut any of the subjects they deem useful, and I imagine the art and gym sections take up a lot of their budget because of all the materials they need to have good programs.
That said, I do not think gym and art should be cut from schools at all, also music programs. It has been proven that they are very vital to a childs overall education and learning process. Maybe they think they can get away with just teaching them the basics we had to learn. I have a big problem with the education system in this country overall, but there is not much we can do about that, until the people in Washington wake up.

Well I hope they do wake up in Washington! You are right - I am always amazed how students from other countries know more than one language and are much more educated that we seem to be. I just read a book called "A Whole New Mind" by Danial Pink - Great book - it talks about how the leaders of the new market will be "right brained" thinkers because we will need people to "design" solutions to all the complex problems that we are and will face in the future. - I include music with art as well - I have taught kids math with music - just using 4 / 4 beats and 2 / 4 beats. Kids love this type of education - Art is a very effective way to appeal to childrens many different learning modalities.

I love to read and will look that book up, thanks for the idea. As for teaching math to kids with music, what a great idea also. When I was in school we had a very good music program, and I learned to play an instrument. I think it helped me farther along the line with my studies and expanded my brain (or something, lol).

This bothers me so much because it has been proven countless times over the decades how much of a positive impact the art programs have on students academically, socially, and scholastically. I don't understand this decision at all. I'm going to sign that petition to stop this action! I believe the arts programs need to stay!

ITs a mistake to remove arts in public school because a person has to be well rounded. If the state only promotes academic education, by this i mean learning from books and research, a whole population of individuals though not gifted accademically but gifted artistically will not be allowed to actualize their potential. I hopoe this isnt true

I take it in the US that public means a state school, unlike in the UK where public means private. Sorry for this sterotype but as the US has such a high population of obese people i agree with this if they replace it with a sports program. However it also removes any form of individual thought on the part of children, and it doesnt matter how much you know, if you arent imaginative enough to put any of the knowledge into practice then it is essentially useless.

I agree - They cut the Athletic programs first. Then Music and art. Now we do have sports programs in High school - They have just been cut in Middle school and elementary. I do not think the should cut anything - I a school has an integrated curriculum then you can teach "the basics" at all times.

Why, are they trying to save money or something? That's a stupid choice; art is essential to a child's development! My school (it was private not public though) piled work on top of us but still kept art, music and gym, because they wanted to "nourish our creative side" (in their own words). Soon all we'll have is overweight, boring kids :( I facebook, but I don't think an online petition will stop this decision if they put it through.

They have been cutting these programs back for years. And not only art and music. But PE as well. No I do not agree with it at all. It is truly a shame.

I don;t like the thought of cutting anything form the schools. However, in our town a bunch of schools are closing next year, and the kids will all be dumped in other schools. This is going to create a huge student to teacher ratio, packed busses, lower test scores, and all of that...I would rather they cut a few programs, and keep smaller classes. Parents can always find extras for their kids. There are community programs across the country for free or low cost to residents, scholarships available from local ministries, and financial assistance from some of the larger schools. It isn't the schools job to cater to the needs of each individual child. The public school system was developed as a mass education system to promote social class growth and weeding. Unfortunately, for those of us who wish it were a beter system, we are left with ony a few options.
