For a fairly new computer I would suggest going for more Random Access Memory because it will definitely speed up the system, even if you are using graphics intensive software or playing games. Just remember to update Direct X drivers.
If your computer is more than three or four years old, consider getting a new PC. It is not easy to get RAM for old systems. If you can find a brand new RAM for an old PC the price is high. Most probably you can find only second hand RAMs.
The cost of new unbranded or branded PCs are comparatively low especially in the present turmoil in the industry. Everything would be new. Even with the same amount of RAM as your current PC, programs will run faster.
In March last year my motherboard was damaged. I was then using an Athlon Sempron. Replacement motherboards were no longer produced, and RAM for them were no longer being sold. I had to spend around MYR 800 (about USD250) for an AMD X2 64 Dual Core, 2Gb RAM, Elite integrated motherboard, and a new power supply. Faster and cooler system.
all the best,

well, well, well...for me more memory...it's just okay if you have small hardisk as long as you have big memory..because you could save your file to any other available storage..i've doing a lot of design almost everyday..and my computer keep on hanging why? because of the low memory..sometimes photoshop and corel just stops and do not function properly..it wasted my time a lots....the computer says that this is due to low memory...and i try adding one more memory since there is still available slots inside my computer and now my computer functions well already..

I would rather go for a upgrade instead of purchasing a new one. Let see what are the components you don't need to change. In this case if all other things are working fine, effe Cabinet, DVD drive , SMPS, Floppy drive, Motherboard, CPU, keyboard, mouse. So, upgrading RAM and Hard disk is better option. One could argue that exchange of these old will give you some money but which will be again lesser than it s cost. So as i see upgrade is better option.

I would prefer more RAM, just because memory seems to be plentiful these days... at least on PCs. Not sure about laptops. I purchased my PC about 5 years ago and even back then they started having 100+ GB of memory which is plenty as far as I'm concerned.

RAM is a very important part of a PC. Even if you have a very fast speed CPU but a little RAM , your programs will run very slow. Not only the programs will run slow but your hard disk performace will continously be downgraded becasue the data will get written into hard disk when there is no much space in RAM
Therefore it is absolutely important to have sufficient RAM.
I have 1GB RAM and a lso a fast CPU. This was important for me becasue i often run many applications and heavy applications at the same time.
1GB is enough for now but there may be need soon to add another 256 or atleast 128 MB Ram is i start using more RAM consuming softwares.

That depends on other computer factors like processor and motherboard . If you have a good processor and motherboard, and if adding a memory module increases the performance, you can add ram. My pc is having p4 processor and a 1gb ram. If i need more ram, i would buy a new computer rather than adding ram. since my pc won't deliver any increased performance with another ram module.

more hard drive space and memory. A: more bang for your buck 500 bucks will get you like 4 gigs of ram. B: keep your current setting so you dont have to set up your desktop and cursors C: no file transfer required.

I suggest you to go for RAM because ram can increase the speed of you computer but hard disk you convert the volumes of DATA in to DVD's and store them.

Hi gobbo980,I'm currently in the same boat as you are,Regarding wether to upgrade my ram or get a whole new system. My advice to you would be that if you are super rich and money is no object to you then go out and buy a brand new system,But if money is a factor in your decision then i would stronglty recommend that you go out and buy some more ram for your computer,This is what i have also decided to do,And i have done much research on the net,If you do the same you'll see that buying extra ram,Which is relatively cheap,Is an excellent way of speeding up your computer and improving performance.Hope i was of some help.
