Dog acting really weird, any advice?

So usually my dog has a certain spot he goes and lays down at, depending on which room of the house I happen to be in. Lately though he refuses to come upstairs with me and lay down where he usually does. He will follow me anywhere around the house except into one of the rooms upstairs. He has never had this problem before and this used to be his favorite room, where he kept all his toys at. It has even gotten to the point where if I start walking up the stairs he will get up from his "downstairs" laying place and go hide behind the kitchen table. There have been no changes within the room and everything else about him, besides this strange behavior, seems healthy. Has your dog ever done anything like this? Is there any way to get him to come back in this room? Could there be something wrong with his health? Any input is appreciated.

Hi Loveyevi, I've read all your responses and at the risk of being branded a voodoo person or insane I'll tell you: I am by no means a spiritualist of any sort but It's been proven that animals do see and feel the presense of ghosts and many times they don't know what to make of this and become frightened:-( Also, Blkat's advice sounds good, try it. ~G~

You took these additional words right out of my mouth. thank you for having the courage to post them. How old is your house and has there been any deaths inside of it, ever?

I only moved here a few months ago and it is an old building. So I do not know if there any types of presences here. I sure hope not and my dog seems a little dopy to be able to pick up on that kind of stuff lol. Thank you for the suggestion though, I will definitely keep it in mind.

Perhaps, dopey but never under estimate a dog. I have heard people claim that humans are more intelligent than dogs. However, I think that dogs do not get enough credit, from the human species for how smart and aware that they really are. javascript:__doPostBack('ctl00$cphMainContent$lbStart','') post comment

That does seem like weird dog behavior and it is funny how you bring this up because two days ago, when I was at my Moms, my dog has her favorite mat and her favorite chair. What was strange is that she took one of her two toys that she has with her and took it between the two lazy boy chairs and laid down in the back. Totally out of character. I am still not sure why she did this. I gave her a bath the night before. We later figured it was because someone was sitting in her chair anf their feet were on her favorite mat. Also, it has been very cold out the past few days. When the door opens, she is right there, if she is on her mat or in the chair. There was traffic in and out of the door that day too. Maybe she was cold. Maybe she didn't like a stranger sitting in her chair. She came out and got her second toy and went back in behind the chairs. Odd. Like with your dog, this behavior seems odd. I would day that your dog is reluctant to go into the room upstairs but why? Did you recently paint, clean or wash something from or in the room around the time this started. Did you add an air freshener? Move furniture? Has someone else been with him in the room and he got startled or scolded for something? Is it warm in the room? Did you bath him just prior to this new behavior. I don't think that your dog is ill. I would take him on a leash or by the collar and lead him upstairs into the room. take a nice soft blanket or mat that he likes and sit with him in the room. maybe shut the door and let him wander. Watch his movements. Perhaps he will show you what is bothering him about the room. It could be that he had to wait too long in that room around the last time he was in it, perhaps he got cold or scared. I would take him there and stay with him, reassuring that it is okay. Read what he is telling you through his body movements. Allow him some treats and toys in the room as well as a bowl of clean water. Do you have a cat that may frequent the room at the same time as the dog? perhaps the cat swatted at him. Did he go potty upstairs in the room so he is avoiding going there so to not be found out? I think he hides behind the kitchen table because there is something he doesn't exactly like about the routine of going upstairs to that room. For example, when my dog and I go for a walk, I put her harness on. Some days she is real good, other days she will run and hide under the kitchen table. Yet she loves to go for a walk. What she is hiding from is having her harness and sweater put on. She is fine once she is dressed and ready to go.

Dogs do strange things, a lot, apparently from your stories, lol. Thank you for the comment. Nothing has changed about the room and maybe something happened in there with my cat while I was away. Thank you for the suggestions.

As I said in a comment, this is a new place where I am living, and the carpets were not changed before I moved in. I will use a black light to see if I can find anything (I still have one from a few decades ago, lol.) I am just scared of what other stains I will find in this room that I don't really want to know about, lol. There must be something in the doggy air lately. I hope you find out what is bugging your dog too, thank you for your numerous suggestions. They are all very helpful.

How old is your dog? Puppies can be funny sometimes. They might get afraid of something which have ben in your house for ages. I guess positive reinforcement always works. Try to use some titbit which helps him to overcome hsi present fears.

Did you adopt the dog or did he has a previous masteR? Was he ill treated in some way or another? These are some questions that are coming in my mind right now.

I got him as a puppy, he was mistreated when younger by people also living in my home when I was not there. But he has been living soley with me for two years and has never had any problems such as this.

I think he is either 3 or 4, I do not know from the top of my head, but either way he is no longer a puppy. He has had strange behaviors before, but never this extreme. Thanks for the response.

there was something probably that traumatized him in that room. when you were away did somebody you don't know very well took care of your dog? is there possibility he was scolded or pain inflicted on him? is there a possibility another animal got into a fight him there? is your dog too heavy to carry? i suggest you bring him up the room, put his favorite toys in there, play with him there, make the room a pleasant experience. have some alone time there, stroke him, assure him so that he'll be comfortable again going there. make him associate that that room will give him rewards and hugs and kisses. good luck!

As far as I am aware nothing traumitizing happened to him in that room and no one else has access to my house while I am out for the day so I do not believe it was anything like that. I have been taking him upstairs and consoling him in the room lately. But it just seems to not be working too well. Although he no longer hides behind the kitchen table when I walk upstairs. Thank yu for your suggestions.

It sounds that dog had some bad experience while he was in his ex-favorite room. Maybe he got hurt somehow, maybe some other person did activities with your dog in that room and now he's afraid. If you are sure there wasn't anyone to scare your dog except you and you haven't done that, then maybe he heard a big noise while was in that room. I have heard dogs hate load noises, maybe there was fireworks or thundering while he was in that laying room. I have heard also that dogs and cats have rich imaginary world. Maybe he has imagined something bad about it. You could try to get him in the room by feeding him there. First feed him upstairs while yourself sitting in that room you dog is afraid of, but so dog sees you that you are fine sitting there. Dogs might be smart but people are smarter, sometimes you need full your pet to make him/her get rid of some things. Good luck!

Thank you for the suggestion. I will try that some more with him, as of now he will follow me into on occassion but then leave as soon as I am not petting him. I will try feeding him in here as well to see if that calms him down.
