How did you (or do you) know what you want to do with your life? I feel like I've been hitting a brick wall for the last three years and I can't overcome it. Is there any particular method you used for knowing what you were going to do with your life?

I am 31, and I am still trying to figure this out myself. I thought I had it all worked out, but a mistake ended up costing me my career, so now I have to start over. I am literally back where I started from before earning my Associate's degree 2 1/2 years ago. I am working at the same restaurant I worked at while going to school, doing the same job. I guess I will figure something out eventually, since I can't seem to do what I really want to do, which is get my own company going...

Wow. I can't even imagine having to start over at 31. That is what I'm trying to avoid by messing up and spending the money now so I don't have that happen to me. What kind of business do you want to start up?

Hitting walls is part of the process. Once you reach the point/right maturity, your purpose would become clearer. I'm guessing you are still young and there are still a lot of things you want to do or prove. Try them all and Find the one that suits you.

I'm 20 right now and yes, there are many things I want to do and prove. I suppose that is the most common sense answer I could've received and don't understand why I didn't think of that myself. I guess I might be the one holding me back from finding what I want because the idea of changing what I do now and finding something about myself out seems a bit of a risky thing. Thanks for the comment. You've given me something to think about....

At my present age, it would be good to know what I really want to do with my life. I am like you though, I have hit many brick walls in the last three years as well. I had a good job in 2006 only to lose it in a reverse discrimination situation. Then I got a pretty decent job which took me 20 miles away from home each and every day. That was not a problem, but when gas began to rise, then it did become a big problem. I began looking for a job closer to home and found one. Man, I wish I never left the previous job! I enjoy writing and I do freelance on the internet. I have finally written my first full length book and working on a second based on my drawings and paintings. I want to do what I can to work in service of the Lord and my best friend and I have started a ministry based around his music and his excellent skills of public speaking. I am the promoter and the editor of our ministry website. If I really wanted to do something that was really exciting, I would want to serve with the men and women in Iraq or Afghanistan. I have a military background, but now, it appears as if I am too old. So, all-in-all, what I do for the rest of my life, will be to make sure that I am able to begin saving money so that my wife is taken care of in case of my untimely demise.

I too had the problem of paying an outrageous amount for gas when I had to drive to my low-paying serving job at a distance of 15 miles one way. The gas money ate up my earnings for the summer. That's awesome that you've written a book! I, too, write. The first book is the worst; at least from my experience. You might try branching out to something like screenwriting. I prefer that because I'm far too detailed of a writer. I wish you luck in the future with your writing and hope your demise manages to be held off til the very-distant future.
