Did you ever have a "penfriend"?

When I was at school I had a penfriend in Africa. We used to write to each other regularly and receive each other's letters by post. We got in contact because both of our schools joined a scheme to connect children from all over the world. I know that now, communication is electronic around 95% of the time, but I quite liked having a penfriend! Did you ever have one? Or do you know if people still have penfriends?

Yes, I used to really enjoy writing to my African penfriend too - I actually cannot remember how I lost contact with her, but am glad that we had contact, even if it was only for a brief while. It must have been really nice for you to meet one of your penfriend's in person?

I used to have a lot, until the price of stamps went so high. I still love writing letters, and I make them quite long. I make my emails quite long too. I like it better than getting 15 short emails. So I send them a nice long one myself.

That's pretty cool that you still make an effort to write letters. I don't know what it is, but receiving an email is just not the same compared to actually having a piece of paper in your hand to read. And if that piece of paper is handwritten from someone special, its so just lovely to receive!

Yes, it is really nice to actually to put pen to paper and write something rather than type it! It's nice that you do still write letters to your family

I had a pen pal when I was in my early teens. She lived in Oklahoma and was a very entertaining person! Then she got married and I guess didn't have the time or inclination to carry on the friendship. I was quite hurt until I got married years and years later and realized just how much your life changes. I hope she's still happily married with grandchildren and a wonderful life.

That's a really sweet story. Did she completely stop all of a sudden without explanation - I can imagine that would be hurtful. But it's so nice that you still have fond thoughts of her and that you wish her the best.

Hey there, penfriends are so much nicer than online friends. Don't get me wrong, having online friends is great, but actually opening up a letter from a penfriend is a little bit different, in a nice way! Thanks for your response

my penpal is a shy boy and when i received the first letter from him the only thought in my mind was that he needed some encouragement, for he was not very good in study, and then we began to write to each other regularly indeed we were both faced with the high pressure of college entrance examination and all the time for us to write letters is before sleeping, but we never dried up the effort.but after the exam we lost contact ,lukily recently i found him online and we keep in touch again:)

I did when I was in high school. He was someone from the seminary and I think he was trying to personally learn how to reach out to the younger generation to help him with his career. He was pretty good at it - he explained theological principles but I think he thought I was 9 instead of 14 then LOL I no longer have a penfriend. And I have very few friend online that I don't know in person. I think I value people's presence too much to bother with other people who are only superficially my friend :) Thanks for the response on my discussion! http://thingswelovetohate.blogspot.com http://canihascheeseburger.blogspot.com/

I did have a penpal but I can barely remember it because I was in the first grade. My teacher had made it writing assignment and apparently had teamed up with another teacher in another state. We all had a penpal. I'm so glad you give me back this memory. I remember keeping that penpal for a couple of years after that but it slowly began to be less and less letters.

Hi JenInTN, I am happy to be able to bring back happy memories for you. I cannot remember too much about my penpal days either but I do remember that I was always very excited to read her letters. There was something very personal about receiving a hand-written letter, and from someone so far away.

Strange question in this era of internet & mobiles. But your question has made me Nostalgic. Even my school encouraged us to make pen friends & after one such pen-friend exercise class, i ended up having 2 pen friends, one from phillipines & other from Australia. We corresponded for few years till the pressure of college education took a toll on our friendship. I remeber that the days i used to recieve their letters were the happiest days of my childhood.

Hi, it's really nice to hear your story. Yes I agree, my question must seem odd, and there are probably lots of users on here that may not know what a penfriend even is. But there was definitely a certain magic about having a penfriend halfway across the world. Thanks for your response
