Is it morally right that actors, receive huge salary?

Julia Roberts - Is it morally right that actors, singers, footballers and other sports persons receive astronomical salaries while people are on the verge of poverty?

I am a soccer fan. I often read about the astronomical weekly wages that the soccer players receive when they sign a new contract. A few weeks ago I was reading that Manchester United Portuguese international Cristiano Ronaldo crashed his newly bought car Ferrari. Most probably he was able to replace it with a weekly wage. I do think that the more money you have the less that you appreciate and value things. If I had a Ferrari (which I will never have because my salary does no permit) I would treasure it as if I had gold. Is it morally right that actors, singers, footballers and other sports persons receive astronomical salaries while people are on the verge of poverty? I dun think it's morally wrong.. After all, they are paid what they are worth.. Since they are able to excel in that particular sports, so why not pay them?? After all, it's not something that u or me as well as others can do it, and thus they are really worth so much.. Imagine the amount of pay of CEOs in those top companies are getting?? They are not doing anything much but yet their pay is so high.. It's due to their talent and ability ^_^

You know I was asking this myself and asking my husband about it. I was going to write a discussion about it..But you beat me to the punch..lol Although mine wsa going to be about Celebrities getting paid so much for movies while the country is on the verge of a economy recession. Should they still be making millions while families loose everything and struggle day to day to make it?I feel that they shouldn't accept such high pay with the economy in dire straights right now. 10-15-20-30- million a movie is just to much.

I do think that we should raise a more social awareness. We are living in an individualistic society with the wrong mentality "I am ok, f*ck you Jack"!

I feel that at times that is what they think. Some do give back and try to help those less fortunate but others do have that crap on you mentality.

I don't think I'd use the word 'moral'. I think 'ethical' is a better word and I have been having thoughts on this myself lately. On the one hand I do believe they are being paid an exhorbitant amount of money, but, on the other hand they do spend a great deal of their time entertaining us, so, I'm kind of betwixt and between on this one. I know I really hate it when an actor demands more pay. Especially if they are asking for $1 million per episode. To me that is totally atrocious and greedy. That's my 2 cents worth. The more people I meet the more I love my cat :) Purrs, Catwoman=^..^= & Mija

For me, it's quite unfair that those celebrities get huge amount of salaries compared to professionals but what can we do? Mos companies are surviving because of celebrities' endorsements. Their talents and looks (even without any brains -- most of them) give them lots of money in their pockets! It is their ultimate advantage towards earning too much (that makes most of them irresponsible)...

it's realy good point. Most of companies are in profit just because of their eambesedors. If company is in profit employee will get good remunaration. Indirectly it's true Actors have major share in running company successfully.

I think that it depends on the education or training they got in their craft. Certainly someone an actor who studies, goes to acting school, goes to University or takes night school or has a tutor to learn the part, learns the stunts, does research in the part he will pay deserves to get a huge salary. But someone who just reads the lines and says 'okay' no. The same with singers, I have looked up what those vocal lessons costs and they are not cheap and you have to learn musical theory, vocal health, the Latin names, etc. and it is not easy. We have the same thing here in Winnipeg when a man who got a job after high school working at a gas station, or quit school starts complaining about the high salaries of the railroad workers but he forgets that they went to trade school and got their journeymen degrees in heavy duty mechanics and boilermaking. Oh I do not think the amount of money less or more increases or decreases your appreciation of things. This is what people who do not make that much say about people who do. It is called envy.

I guess the more people watch their movies then they will get higher pay I don't know how people earn so much but in some fields looks and fame bring money and in others talents and hard work bring money the thing is the more ppl live on the edge of poverty, sales will be down so these guys will not be making as much money either not that it matters because they may have a huge savings account already

No I don't think it's morally wrong. Many actors only work a couple of times a year so you have to make what you can when you can. Especially for female actors. As soon as they start to age the roles don't come around as frequently and they don't get paid as much as they did when they were young leading ladies. It's the same for sports figures. Many have very short lifespans in their game. For American Football so many get injured they're lucky if they can play for 5 yrs. They need to make as much as they can in a short time. What I find so sad is the ones who make like $10 million a year then get so caught up in a high spending lifestyle. When their popularity fades they go broke in a short period of time. I understand that it's a lifestyle that would be easy to get caught up in but they really need to be smarter about managing the money they have.

It is true that most people in the limelight do have a short working span. For example soccer players might have a career of ten years but this does not justify the enormous big fat salaries that they receive. Especially when people in this millenium are still dying of hunger, poverty and disesase that there are cure for them.

Nah, but that is the world we are living in today. What can you say. That is why I am a fan of people with money who actually use it to do good things. For charities etc. When you have it you should share it. End of story. If all wealthy people felt this way, there would be so much less poverty. Because we all really would be taking care of each other.

Actors are normally paid based on their reputation and therefore, even under the world economic crisis and when they are lots of people who are on the verge of poverty, they would still be getting high pay if the movie that they acted in can be sold to and watched by millions of people worldwide. It is really not their fault that some people are doing that well in life but it would be really nice if those film producers, who are the one that actually make most of the money to give back some of the profits to improve the situations for the poor. Anyway, that is just some kind of social responsibilities for them and there is no way anybody can force that onto them and only them can decide whether to give back or not... So my friend, it is not really morally wrong for actors to make that huge money from their acting as along the way, you would also encounter veteran actors who are no longer needed and being left in a very sad state of life and they walk the life just like any poor people in the world... All we can hope for is for those who have more would give away more to others who have less and if every single human being in this planet ave that mindset, there would really be no poor people in this world but I am sure that many of us would never believe that utopia can ever exist in our world where people who are already rich will squeeze everything out of those who are poor just to make sure that they remain rich or become richer... At the same time, those who are poor would never think twice to take away from other poor people so that they are better of than the other poor people... It is nothing but a dog eat dog world and what can we do about it... Maybe actors and film producers would double their effort to make films that would be about what it is to be a good human beings rather than about nothing but just for the sake of having fun... Cheers!

well, morally or not, when it comes to sports for example, i know for a fact, that to become that good as cristiano ronaldo, you have been training everyday of your life since you where maybe 8 or so... and even before for somes.. also for really good musicians or actors.. after so much sacrifice, you become some kind of inspiration when you are that famous, sometimes their life doesnt have any privaty anymore, because of the fans for example. so.. well to get as much money instead of a normal life, sounds nice, but is not that easy actually. now there are offcourse the lucky wild cards in everything that reach heaven without much effort, for them... well life is fair till a certain point for everyone.

I think it right. After all they have took that much ;abour for reaching to that monent. When they are freshers was anyone there to pay them. But now they have made the goodwill of their name. And this is the amount of goodwill they are getting. And see all are doing their work for earning money if somebody is earning by hiss goodwill then it's OK.

no way they receive astronomical payment than common people or the more contrituting people. I'm saying this not because of jealousy but for the practical reasons. Salary is given by the contribution to the community, Yes, they provide entertainment to us, but it doesn't mean they get thousands of times payment. The money is being spent so unreasonalby. Why does the authorities turn a blind eye on this is quite beyond me.

I suppose the money is really nice to have but I'm sure that it's true that the value of money is lessened when you have so much of it. You are able to do absolutely anything you want to do. This is just the kind of crazy world that we live in. Anyway, I'm sure that there are many famous footballers as well as actors that are really grateful for the position they find themselves in. I don't know how i would exactly relate it to morality but then i would just say it is UNFAIR but then what is fair in this world? people are suffering too much poverty, there are kids on streets with no foods, they have to look for food in the garbage to be able to eat..that is how i see here in the Philippines and on the other side we do have actors and actresses that have things that they do not even need, or houses they could not even sleep all at once! It is just plainly unfair, unequal distribution of wealth. What right do they have? well in this society everyone has the right to own what they want given that they can..and actors, actresses, athletes can and it is in the nature of their job and that is why they could afford it...but what can we do? let's think that even though we do not have what they have, we are happy in our own lives, we have our loved ones, our friends and even though we could not afford those luxurious cars and houses, we have family and friends that makes our small houses we can call home...rather than those actors who have everything, have luxurious weddings but in the end they divorce, or those athletes that have great cars yet they do not have true friends that ride with them. Let us just be thankful of what we have and pray that hoping those that who have will know how to appreciate it and be able to share it with those people who do not have....

It's not morally wrong, but I think it's ridiculous that some people would be paid obscene amounts of money to act or chase around a ball. I mean, aside from being entertaining, what they do isn't really useful to people in the way that, say, stem cell research is. But I suppose it's about market demands. It just goes to show where our priorities are.

I think its stupid that actors make more money then everyone in the world. I was watching tv the other day and a hockey player from where i live makes more money then the Prime Minister and he runs the country. I think its rediculous that even a doctor who saves people's lives doesn't even make the same salary as a hocky player or an actor. Yeah sure there on tv and have big roles in movies that people spend thousands on each year it doesn't mean you should make more money then a person who saves lives, Or a person who runs a country. Sorry about my long rant there I just feel very passionate about the concept

They maybe recieving a lot of money but its what they do. We can't be all actors. Its their luck, I guess. The amount of money they are getting might be considered obscene, :) but they worked for it too.
