70,000 Jobs Lost in 1 Day - What are you doing to get by?

I saw on the news that 70,000 jobs were lost today. The number continues to rise. Companies that we thought were solid as a rock are folding. Where does it end? My son has been out of work for over a year now. He picks up odd jobs here and there, but basically, he is unemployed.
I live in the city that never sleeps and even here they are laying off people in the casinos. Our city is going broke. Teachers are being laid off. There is talk of closing schools. Where does it end?
I had a little retail store. The rent was more than we could pay because the clientele dropped off. We closed the store when the lease ran out. My husband has taken a job as a security guard at night. We thank God for that.
Has your job been affected? What are you doing to make ends meet during this depressing recession?

Things are definitely going to get worse before they get better. I work in a restaurant, and we are feeling the effects of the economic crisis as well. We are making it, but business is definitely down. My wife works in a small, privately owned restaurant, and they are BARELY hanging on. She really doesn't know from one week to the next whether or not she has a job. I have a friend who is a construction worker, and he is laid off indefinitely. Things are really tough here right now. I am looking for a second job right now, but with things the way they are, I am not having any luck finding one. I don't know how long it is going to take me to find a second job, but meanwhile, I am getting deeper and deeper in the hole...

Sad about the construction business. It is just about at a complete halt. We are in a town that was booming with new construction. In fact the construction dust kept my asthma in high gear. Now all you see are abandoned sites with a lone security guard to keep people from stealing the building materials. They can't even give new homes away. Restaurants are not nearly as crowded as they used to be. At the same time, the service is worse because they have cut back on the staff. It is a vicious cycle. Nothing gets better. I wish you the best.

Yes, sadly the scammers have taken to the internet airways also. You really have to be careful. There are so many get-rich schemes that it makes you dizzy just browsing.

I retired in 2007. I'm trying to be careful with my money and not spend foolishly.

Good for you! You are one of the lucky ones. Not many get to retire these days.

Hi StarBright,
Each day brings the world closer to one common denominator...the internet. With jobs down, it is a time to look forward into a different world. International communications may very well be our thread of life to best regain our strength as a nation committed to equality and freedom.
I do hope Obama becomes the greatest president in American history. Not only will this man bring together fresh ideas, but he will also reshape the nation. Educational resources will be rewritten once again with our new found leader. Despite the desperate outlook for our future, Obama will be fair and smart. I support change and grasping the idea of intertwining different cultures for success.
Thanks for the news flash and expressing your thoughts.
Meow & Ciao!

Thank you Puddytat101. We share that hope for our president and our country. I, too, believe he is the right man for the job.
