which is the best linux distro for scientific and engineering purpose?

What ever package is capable to do that. It is a matter about flavor I believe. If you want to try good one, try Fedora (I believe it is the most stable - less copyright infringement distro ever build). Choose the right version, I mean if your processor have 64-bit capabilities, download the one that can maximize your processor. It can be use full if you need to do so much pushing calculating powers.
