Actually cats and birds can co-habitat in the same household safely enough.
If it's a small caged bird, make sure the cage is high enough out of the cat's reach. Or that it is secure enough to not get knocked down. Secure the doors of the cage with twist ties to keep curious paws out.
Larger birds, like parrots, can usually fend for themselves. Once a cat has been bitten by a parrot it will usually leave it alone!
We had a talking parrot type bird for a short time. He was fun to listen to although we had no idea what he was saying. (We think it might have been Spanish))
Some smaller birds can learn to talk although not as clear as parrots. Parrotlets, Cockatiels and even a few parakeets have been known to speak words.

When I was younger I kept love birds as pets. They were very cute and fun to take care of. I also had a cat and I managed to keep the cat away from them and when they accidentaly flew out of the cage it was kinda fun to watch the cat try to get at them. She never actually caught them though.
My neighbor has a pet parrot. Sometimes it gets annoying because he is quite loud. She got him from a pet store and his favorite thing to do is meow like a cat. I always have trobule differentiating between him and stray cats that happen to be outside, lol.
I would love to get a parrot though because from the things I hear between the wall of my neighbor he brings her a companion that she can actually talk to and that will respond, and even though it may not always respond coherently, I think it could be quite exciting to have a "conversation" with a bird.

I have 2 birds! My Cockatoo came from an abusive home. He plucked a lot of his feathers from his back and chest. He's been with me a little over a year and has since grown the feathers on his back. His chest is still bare but we love him anyway! :-) He hangs around with my kids and has lotsa love!
Last week I took in a Pionus Parrot. This little guy came from a home where the owner just didn't have enough time to spend with him. It only took him a couple of days to get used to his new surroundings and he's now talking up a storm and is very comfortable around everyone.

I do, I have 2 parakeets, one Baraband and one Yellow Ringneck. We have had Robbie, the Baraband for the longest and took on Charlie the Yellow Ringneck after his last owners got sick of him :( i dont understand how anyone could get sick of him, he's lovely. loud, admittedly, but he's part of the family!
