A character he was, whether he was good or not is to be debated. Personally for that style character I like Mama from Mama's family.

I love Mama, too! However, in 1970, Archie Bunker was a very innovative character that helped change TV forever. He was controversial, and the controversial topics of the day were addressed in the show. Most of what they say is still relevant today. I am thinking that maybe that was what they thought made him the top character, not exactly the character itself. I forget what # Edith was, but she was high on the list, too. Thanks for your input.

I think this character was a real stretch for Carroll O'Connor, but he played it so well. Originally the show's creators had wanted Mickey Rooney for the part, but they couldn't get him. I can't imagine what the part would have been like with Mickey.
The Fonz was in the top 10, and Henry Winkler did a lot of narrating during the show.

Hawkeye is cool, and he ranked high on the poll. I don't know how they ever came down to the best one character, though. There have been so many excellent ones and so many different criteria they could have used to rate them. I feel that they were looking for innovative characters that had an effect on the future of TV when they did the poll I watched.

he was definitely one of the most unforgettable. Unfortunately I had a dad just like him. He was so true to life that is what made it funny.
I think Red from That 70 show should be up in the top 10 too.

Yes, Archie was a little bit like my dad, too. I think that's why Dad hated him and the show so much. I'm not sure who all they had in the top 10, but I know Red was not among them. Two was Ralph Kramden from the Honeymooners. Three was Lucille Ball. The most recent character I can remember being in the top 10 was Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Somehow I didn't quite rank her with the other characters.

wow, I forgot about Ralph Kramden. He was great too. My one daughter use to say I was another Archie Bunker. When she was little, she said I was crabby all the time...just like Archie...but Ralph was a bit of a crab too...

I loved Archie and I have to admit some of his lingo wore off on me. Like to this day I still call a toilet a turlet. I thought his character was brilliant because he was such a hypocrit and closed minded, but you couldn't help but love his ignorance.

That's still to this day, one of those shows that if I'm channel surfing, I just have to stop at least to see what episode it is. But if I stop to see....I have to finish the show! I don't know what it is, but there's just something wonderful about his blind ignorance! I especially liked the ones with Sammy Davis Jr!! Aloha!

Boy, that is a tough one...I do love the character of Archie Bunker, but there are a lot of classic stars that I love too.
Maybe him and Barney Fife could have a tie...lol
Love them both
