I had mine when I was about thirteen and was in second year high school. Although am quite aware about it as it was being taught at school still felt quite nervous then as I wasn't been expecting it that soon. I felt a little awckward and tried hiding it from everybody's knowledge in fear of being teased. What about you? when did you have your first period and how did you deal w/ it?

I was devistated when I first had mine. I had my first one in the fifth grade and I can remember thinking that there was something wrong with me. My mom wasn't the best about having the talks with me that she needed to have. When I finally told her that I thought something was wrong, and she told me what it was, I begged for her not to tell anyone especially my father. Needless to say when I came home from school that day, my father asked me how I was feeling, and then I knew my mom had told him. I complained to her, then she told me that her and my older sisters cried together on the phone. Ugh!!! I was embarassed at the time, but now that I have had several nieces go through it I understand what my mom and sisters felt, although I will say, I never told any of them that their mother told me and we cried together.

I would understand how hesitant you were not to tell your father about it. However, am quite perplexed w/ the family's crying over for the menstrual period? I hope you can share us more about it. Thanks for the response.

Oh I see, I now seem to understand the seemingly "strange" feeling your family was having when you got your first cycle. They are quite apprehensive of the events that will surely take place as you are entering the womanhood stage. That's normal but I hope they (and you too) would dwell in the positive and informative side as some changes will be taking place. Thanks for the explaination.

It isnt apprehension at all. Honestly at this point I dont know how to explain it to you. We do not dwell in it at all. Its a passing moment. As I said I do not know how to explain it to you. Do you have children? If you do how old are they. Surely you have experienced this emotion if you have children. Its the same emotion when your child takes their first step, when they do something great, you are proud but at the same rate you realize they are growing up. I would think that all parents, would experience this with any accomplishment that their child does. Granted we are talking about getting your first period so its a bit different but the emotion is the same. Am I the only one that experience this. Yes it is my nieces but I love them as if they are my own. But surely there are mothers out there that when their little girl got their first cycle they were glad, emotional at the fact that their little girl is growing up.

I had my first period when I was 9 years old and I was in elementry school math class! Got up to use the bathroom right before going outside to play and freaked out that I was bleeding! Mind you I had no clue what a period was back then and well I had boobs before the other girls!

You seem to experienced it quite early then and I understand the odd feeling you had. I guess 9 is the earliest for a girl to have he first period. There are others who have theirs quite late as well, like 15-19. Thanks for the response.

Actually nine isnt the earliest. My uncles niece started hers way to early, she was about 4, of course this isnt natural so they took her to a dr for testing, they ended up putting her on some medicine to stop it. I have a niece who just was barely 8 that started hers, she was no where near ready, so my sister took her in to a specialist, and they did some testing, and she has to go every 4 months to KC for a shot and a check up. They monitor her growth very closely because of this.

I got my first one when I was 12...I wasn't surprised or shocked b/c both my Mom and stepmom had told me all about it and explained how to use pads and all that. It was also at that age that I went from being flat chested and boyish to developing completely almost overnight.

It's good to hear you were not surprised nor scared like some girls who are not so aware of that stage in life. A good and proper orientation from adult people will really help a girl understand such changes. Thanks for the response.

Oh good that you were quite aware about it before you finally had it. Actually I had the same w/ yours as well; having it for the first time but just in a day and was very little spot. I already knew that was it but it never came back until about 6 months and finally the real one. Thanks for the response.

Yes 9 is the youngest so far I know of girls having their first period. But there are a lot of them like you who have theirs like your age too. Thanks for the response.

I completely understand the feeling, I did the same too. parents and school as well should educate young girls concerning these matters to make them aware and be informed. Thanks for the response.

I received my 1st pd when I was 12 in the 8th grade I was @ school. The teacher sent me to the nurse and then I sent home with some litature about the changes that a young lady goes through. I wasn't scared but I was embarrassed because I had on some white shorts and I won't never forget that because all the boys was teased me.

Well I know the feeling; it's really embarassing specially at the time when you are not so prepared for it and you don't know what to do. it's a good thing though that your school has good facilities to assist you then. Thanks for the response.

I guess it's not very young; most girls have their first period usually around 12 or 13. I understand it's not an easy feeling then as it'squite a new experiance every woman has to be with through. Thanks for the response.

That seems a little early for some girls to have their first period. I would assume you were not so prepared that time and you might have mixed emotions and even confusions. That's normal specially if your pals are not yet through w/ such experience, you'll likely to feel odd somehow. Thanks for the response.

I had my first period when i was 14.
I was prepared for it as my mum had already explained to me what would happen when i was just nine.
So it did nor bother me at all the only thing that was a bit embarrassing that it happened during P.E at school.

That good to hear that you were already aware about it and that you ar equite mature to handle it when it came. Monthers should explain everything about menstruation to their young daughters who are about to have it so they will at least be informed and not mislead. Thanks for the response.

I had mine when I was in 5th grade I think. I was really young then and didn't know what to do. I think at some point I even used tissue paper as my napkin! Haha! It was really awkward trying to hide it from my om and my classmates. Thankfully she found out and then introduced me to to tampons and other things that I should know about menstruation. When my friends found out, no one really teased me about it. Thank God for an all-girl's school!

hahahahaa.....that sounds funny. Well you see, school and parents should need to tell young girls in advance everything about menstruation so as to prepare them physically and emotionally. There are girsls who have it at a very early age and don't know what to do; and worst feel awckward, confused and ashamed about it which should not be. If they are well-informed they don't feel odd about it like you did. Thanks for the response.

I had mine when I was about 11 years old. To me that seems really young. Most girls follow there mothers footsteps but in my case I did not. My mother started when she was 14 years old. I never really understood why I started earlier than she did. But now sometimes I wish I had started at a later age but than I would not have my daughters than so I guess everything happens for a reason. Nice dicuss happy mylotting!

Well 11 is quite young but there are girls younger than you to have thiers at 9 or 10. I had mine at 13 and I guess that's mostly the age of having the first menstraution but of course it varries from woman to woman. Thanks for the reply.

I had my first when I was thirteen too during the summer. I am just glad it wasn't during school. I was at home too so I guess I was lucky. I told my mom because I wasn't nervous and I knew it would be coming soon and she took me out to the store and bought me pads.

Such a grat experiance you had. it's a good thing mothers should know how to explain about theses things to their daughters. You see, you were not scared, panicked or even shocked w/ the first time experience; give credit to your mom. Thanks for the response.

I was 9 when I had my first period. I was skipping on our terrace when suddenly I noticed it. I was way too small to understand and cope with this…in the blink of an eyelid my childhood was gone forever. Its one of the major reasons I resent womanhood, why I will always want to be born a man.

Hahahaa....you sound a little funny; just because you had your early period you want to be a man instead. Well yes, I guess your's is quite early. While there are others who had theirs very late (15-19) yours is too early and honestly I guess I remember myself still playing at 9. But anyway, there's nothing wrong w/ it; there are women who experience it at a very early age and still considered it normal. Than ks for the response.

Oh so you were one of those who sat on a "gabi leaf" or have the egg rolled on their cheeks, or have their underware patted on their cheeks? (and many more)....lol! Well I heard a lot about it but I never did it then although my friends told me to do so as they were doing it themselves. Well yours is quite late; I mean normally girls have theirs in their 12 or 13 years. But anyway I guess that's still normal. I remember a friend who had hers at 19 when she's already in college but she's fine. Thanks for the response.

I bet it was and I guess everybody goes throuugh some physical and psychological discomfort during their first period. Mothers or older sisters can be the best help in times like that as they already know more about it. Thanks for the response.

The first time I had my period when I was in first year high-school, I'm also thirteen years old that time. My first reaction was I'm so excited because I'm one yet felt awkward because of the blood...I dealt with it as if I'm training myself not to stain my uniform or else...hehe(^_^)

Good to hear that. You seemed very much informed and was already aware you gonna have it. I was having mixed emotions I guess; I felt excited but at the same time a little nervous but I guess that's very normal. Thanks for the response.

Oh sounds like quite a little late; I mean most girls have theirs between 12-13 or some about 14. Well there are also some girls who experienced late cycles. I have a friend who had hers at 19. Her mom almost brought her to the Doctor to see if there's something wrong w/ her but she was fine. Thanks for the response.

I got my first period when I was twelve. It was at night and my laundry needed to be done so I had to borrow a pair of my moms undies...she was like...why? And I had to say...I got my period. Hehe. I already knew about it, so I wasn't like freaked out or anything. I guess it just felt natural. A little weird too lol.

It's good that you didn't panicked or shocked as some girls did. yes, it's a little bit weird but if you are aware of it then it came very natural and you know what to do. Thanks for the response.
