Apparition or afterimage?

A few days ago, I went downstairs for a snack after spending a few hours online. It was around 3 am and I switched the lights on in the living room and proceeded to the dining room, which was right next to the living room. The light switch to the dining room is on a post right in the middle of the room so you have to walk into the room in darkness before you have access to the switch. As I entered the dining room, I saw a smokey-greyish figure hovering in the corner of the dining room in the dark. As I saw it, it immediately floated or hovered towards me. I could feel my hair standing as it was approaching me fast but as soon as it was about 2 feet from me, it just vanished, and my fright disappeared with it as well and when I turned on the lights, there was nothing there.
Our house is pretty old but it's not that old. I think it was built around the late 30's and I've never seen anything unusual before, except when I was very young but then I no longer remember the details to it. I've never seen or experienced any ghostly apparitions but then I can't disregard them completely since I believe our universe is to big to be limited only to what's physical but then, I also tend to think logically so I don't usually believe in things I have not personally sensed or experienced.
What do you think? Was it an apparition or probably just an afterimage or something? Ever had any weird experiences like this?

The only and the scariest supernatural experience I had was when I went camping in
the woods. I was walking alone in the woods after dinner towards the campsite. It
was about 8pm that time but it was actually bright because my teachers had set up
lights to light up the path to the campsite. Because the lights were on my left my
shadow is on my right but the strange thing is there's a weird looking shadow just
inches in front of my shadow, it really looks like a head, a head with no body. I
didn't dare to look and just ran without looking left or right. If ran like that during a 100 meter race I think i would've won lol. But i think that it was just something that got stuck on the lights wires or there was a floating head there.
