One word I can associate with love is pain. It's the first word that came into my head when I read your question. Love doesn't really entail perfect happiness, I think. It requires sacrifice and stuff and they say that you will know that you really are in love when you've experienced getting hurt.

It's like what the first person said.. Love requires sacrifice.. I think it does come with pain because there's this process of giving up.. of acceptance and trying to be selfless.

Okies thanks for your reply.
Now let me explain you what I think is love.
Love is NOT a feeling. It is something which you can see when your parents sacrifice things for your happiness. Look at what you will do because you like you pet. Love is not what husband and wife do on their marriage night. Love is the sacrifice. It is knowing your other mates' weakness and not to point that out but to make changes within yourselves to complete those, cover those weakness.
Most people think love is a feeling because its portrayed like that in movies and plays and what not. But true love is nothing but true sacrifice for someone who you want to see happy!
Hope I tried my best to explain what I had in mind.
:)
In short, love is SACRIFICE.

Selflessness. That should be the word to describe love. With love, you think not of yourself first but the one you love. You seem to disappear and exist only for him/her and all selfishness vanishes and what's left and what matters is not yourself but the one you love.
Anyway, have a good one.
