After a recent bout with cancer, we had to put our cat to sleep last week. I didn't see it coming but instead thought she was just cold since the weather here was freezing the week before last. I miss her and remember the fun times we had and what a loving companion. How difficult was it for you to have to put a pet to sleep knowing it was the right decision?

oh im so sorry to hear about your kitty. i know its hard to loose a cherished pet. I personally have not had to make that kind of decision. but about years ago my little cat ruthy went outside at night and during the night she somehow got in the road and got hit. i cried for days. i know how you feel. man that has to be one of the hardest decisions but if your kitty was suffering then i guess that was the best thing for him even tho it is hurting you. so sorry for your loss.

The shock of losing your kitty as you did had to be so hard. I am sorry. My situation was sad because I had a couple of days to nurse her back to what I thought would be good health. It didn't work. Our cat is in a better place now sine the quality of her life would have been awful if she had lived. Thanks so much for responding.

I'm so sorry for your loss, carol. This brought tears to my eyes because I just had to put one of my cats to sleep on Christmas Eve. He was 12 and although I knew he was getting older, it was still a bit of a surprise because he had never been sick. Although it was difficult, I knew it was the right thing to do. He was already suffering and I couldn't let him go through anymore.
The vet really helped a lot. She was kind and explained everything to me. They let me spend all the time I wanted with him and say goodbye. When I picked up his ashes a few days later, they also gave me a poem and a candle. Then a couple of days after that, they sent a small plant to the house with a card written by the vet and Mickey's paw print. I was really touched.

It is like saying goodbye to a close family member...my dog was so hard to part with my son came and took him to the vet....and he cried too. THat is part of the reason I haven't gotten another pet...you get so attached then suddenly they are gone. I know you really miss her...they are such good company!

I told my husband and kids, no more pets. It was an awful experience. She was right with me all the time no matter where I went in the house. I miss her little meow's. We do have a dog and he's a great pet also but not as attached to me. Thanks for responding.

hello carolbee
i am so so sorry to hear about your kitty passing away like that. that is ashame that our pets get cancer like we can. (hugs) maybe in time you can get yourself another cat. a kitten might be a blast to have around. and we have a female dog right now, and we do not know anything about her either. she was a stray dog several years ago, and yes, it will be a sad sad day around here when Doughnut passes away.
take care of yourself.

I had to wait several days to post this discussion. Just couldn't bring myself to do it before today. She was a great pet. I threw away all her dishes, etc. since my dr. told me I am allergic to cats. Not certain I believe that one since an allergist told me I had no allergies. Had the needle sticks last year. Anyone she is gone but not forgotten. I miss her but remember all the happy days with her. We also have a dog but the cat was a first time experience. Thanks for responding.

I have had two pets that I had to put down because of cancer. I had a cat who disappeared for 6 months and then showed up on our doorstep one day. We had him again for about a month and then he all of a sudden took a turn for the worse. We rushed him to the vet at about 2am after his mouth was filled with puss and he wouldn't eat. They said it was Leukemia. Apparently in cats it is contagious so be careful.
I also had a ferret who one day stopped using one of her back legs. I took her to the vet, he said she must have gotten it stuck in her cage so he gave me an anti inflammatory for her. It worked for about a week then both of her back legs stopped working. I took her to a different vet who said that she had a tumor wrapped around her spine. The anti inflammatory shrunk the tumor and then it grew back twice the size. They told me it would only get worse and that the best thing I could do for her was to put her down.
I don't know how I feel about euthanasia with animals. We don't do it with people that we love so why do it to the animals that we love? In both cases I was led to believe I didn't have a choice and you always have to wonder if you did the right thing or not.

You sure tried to take care of your pets. That's all we can do when they are really sick.
It's hard to make that final decision. After seeing the vet, the vet sent her home with me and told me to spend time with her, my decision was made. She had cancer of the lung and the mass was large. She lost 2 1/2 lbs. real fast. They tried giving her steriods and other vitamins but it just didn't work. Guess she was too far gone. Because I didn't want her to suffer, we put her to sleep. My husband and kids agreed. Our kids came over to see her one final time and told me that I just couldn't keep her alive. Told them at that point I wasn't going to. She couldn't eat or drink. Thanks for responding.

That is sad that she got sick like that. I have had to put pets to sleep. The last time was the hardest. Kehleb was my loyal companion for six years. I found her as a stray when she was a puppy. She had kidney disease and she was not doing well and started to get aggressive if even the kids got near her. Because she was so loving to me it was really hard to have to have her put to sleep. I still miss her and that was almost two years ago.

I'm so sorry to hear about this, Carol. I know it's hard to do but now your cat is waiting for you to join her at Rainbow Bridge, free of pain and any other problems she may have had. I never look forward to putting my animals down because they are my kids. I really hurts to have to do it but deep down I know they are free of the pain they were in. I'm usually hopeless for a few days after having to put one of my beloved pets to sleep.

Oh geez I couldn't imagine myself putting my pets to sleep. Just thinking about it makes me cry already. But if I had to, it would really take a lot prayers to be able to do it.
I'm so sorry to hear about your pet cat. I hope there's something I can do to ease the pain. But I'm sure your cat is happier now rather than suffer.
My you be blessed with another kitty to take care of.

Hi carolbee,
I am so sorry for the lost of your kitty, it must have been heartbreaking. When I lost my cat Roley because he had cancer I was really heartbroken and cried for a week or more, I couldn't eat or sleep, I had to take time of from work for two weeks and the doctor had to sedate me, I was that bad, it is so hard to lose ones pet as they are like your child and he was my little boy, I still miss him although I have two little treasures now Baby and Tom. Hugs.

at 55 I've had to put a lot of beloved cats to sleep and none have been easy
I've always had other cats at home, but each one is missed because each one is their own little fur person.
I'm sorry for your loss, but when you are ready, find another little body that needs a safe home and give him or her it. No, he or she won't be a replacement, but they will be another pet that needs you and you will find they make their own space in your heart.

I've never had an easy time with putting my pets down, but I always knew it was for the right reasons. It's always been about disease with us, too, so we couldn't watch our pets suffer. It's been a LONG time since I've had to do this because we didn't get more pets after the last time (in 1998). I want to get some more pets now that I have children that are growing and would enjoy the experience.

i am so sorry to hear about your little cat , i looked at the picture you posted and it brought tears to my eyes. you have my utmost sympathy as its a very hard decision to make. you have released your precious cat from more pain and illness. i believe in the rainbow bridge where all our darling pets go. one of my cats got run over december 1st last. i posted it on mylot as i just needed to pour out my feelings and with one exception , everyone was very sweet. i still have 4 cats, and one dog. in the past i have had to have pets put to sleep. the worst one , was my alsation. i had no control over what they did, they shaved his leg to put the needle in and to this day i can see his terrified face as he couldnt understand the noise , but i stayed with him until the end. bearing this in mind when i took my old poodle to the vets,( he was 20 and the vet said he had 2 tumours ) the vet was very kind, i told her about my alsation. so she took her time, she gave pepi a tranquiliser to calm him down. and he literally fell asleep in my arms. i must have been in there at least half an hour. but having said all that, it is one of the most sad decisions to make. you have all my support and a big hug.xx

I'm sorry to hear that. It is always difficult to make that decision. Remember though that there are many animals that never have known love, a home, compassion, even eating regularly. You gave her so much and I know she gave so much back to you. Even with this choice, you did it with love. Would that I go with someone looking after me and loving me.
The worst for me was a cat that I adopted from an organization I volunteered for. The vet they used said he had done the test for feline luekemia. We came home from work one day and he was deathly ill. We rushed him to the vet we used. Cisco lost control of his bladded upon arrival. They did blood work. It was feline luekemia. He didn't make it. He was playing that morning. My husband was so angry.
By all means, remember the blessings.

I feel for you and I am very sorry for your loss. I have four pets and I love them so much and I appreciate how difficult this must have been for you. Of course you did the best thing for her although I'm sure it doesn't feel that way right now! Give yourself some time and eventually you will probably be able to get another cat so you will have something else to focus on to fill the void. All the best to you.

Isn't that wierd that cats are succeptable to Cancer like that. I used to buy the shots myself at the pet store and give the shots to the cat myself. So in all the years with all of the cats I've lived with I never got to see one die of cancer. We've live thru every other malady a cat can get though it seems.
Definately the right decision. Besides, the little kittens are so cute! You will hear the pitter patter of little kitties playing and destroying your house soon enough.
My condolences for your loss
