It Is A Different World Out There

Started last month and continuing to this month, I had been to several job interviews. In fact I was even offered a job today but somehow, I will still wait until next week before I accept the offer as it is the last in my preference list as the remuneration package is a bit on the low side... Anyway, I would like to talk about one of the interviews that I went to and came out feeling very annoyed with the interviewer for he was simply being snobbish and arrogant. Firstly, it was a second interview and for that I would have expected that he should have read my resume before calling me for the second interview and wasted my time. His arrogance made me feel like giving him the middle finger and ask him to fly whatever that was necessary! If he had read my resume before calling me for the second interview, he would know that I do not have the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, that I was planning to do this year anyway and I was never exposed to Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) in my previous job. That would have saved both of us valuable time and I did not have to listen to him bragging how everybody under his command is PMP and CMMI certified. What is the big deal about the certification when what I have to offered is my vast experience relevant to the job that needed someone to fill in? If others can be certified, why can't I take the courses or exams to be certified while working there? Instead he gave me some lame excuses about me not being able to cope and catch up with others if he were to take me in. That was one of the lamest excuse for somebody who hold a high position in a company to come up with... Anyway, there is a saying that says what you do to others would be done to you and I hope that guy would one day realized that he is not the greatest person just because he has all these titles behind his name! What do you think of that?

That was bad but there are more of them out there. Years ago I was called for an interview in the city. I rode a motorbike then and I think you can imagine how I was dressed. My one and only rival came by car, and dressed with a suit and tie. We were vying for a managerial position in a well known body dealing with books. I had experience in selling books while he was a plantation manager. He was treated cordially because he was well dressed. The moment I sat in front of the interviewer everything was wrong with me. The way I dressed and the fact that I did not have any degree in business or management were highlighted. I tried to point out my successes in turning around three small businesses but they were considered irrelevant. So i decided to clam up. When he asked me how I would increase sales from MYR150,000 to MYR250,00 I did not answer. I had plans to increase it to MYR400,000, but I was not prepared to share with him knowing very well I would not be accepted as an employee. The other guy got the job and they implemented one of my plans which I laid out before I clammed up. They did it wrong and sales did not increase. This guy whom interviewed you may not suffer the same fate. His offspring may have problems which may affect his mental health. Just look at it from the positive side. There may be something else better out there. all the best, rosdimy

Thanks for sharing your experience. I guess that's what would happen when a person failed to see the human side of another person and got blinded by man made standards and procedures... You are right, there is always a blessing in disguise when things happened the way they are... Thanks!

First of all, let me say congratulations to you on getting an interview. A lot of us out there can't even get that. So it sounds like you'll be employed in no time. And about the Karma, you're right. Things do come back on people. They may hold a high position of authority, but things go wrong no matter. It may not be financially or employment wise for someone like that, but things do come back on you. As they say, Every dog has his day. Good luck to you!

Sounds like a middle management a$$ who was making it look like he was trying to fill that position, while simply wasting your time and his. There's no big deal about PMP certification. I have the certified classroom hours but not the hours managing projects because you have to have projects to manage and my previous employer had none. As I'm sure you know, getting the classroom hours takes a relatively short amount of time...it's not brain surgery...so, I agree, that this man's excuse was very lame.

That is exactly the point. Everybody can get certified but not everybody can have the relevant experience... Cheers!

Long time no story friend! How is your life recently? Anyway, with my young experience I would say that he will get back what he did to you. Well, the world is round, isn't it? I agree with what you say about the need of vast experience is much more important than certificate, at least in your case. My father is the nearest example I could give as he knows how to repair computer and things related to it, as well as wiring, and teaching. But, only because he have no certificate except for SPM (I cant remember the old version name of SPM right now) almost everyone seem to not look at him. Well, that's a bit bitter for him. Anyway, I hope you will get a job as soon as possible - a good one. Have a great life.
