Small home improvement projects - how hard could it be?

Simple Home Improvements - I can do it!

There are a few things that need fixing in our apartment and I have decided to do something about it myself. I know it's going to cost a lot to call in a plumber to fix one of our toilets, the leaking kitchen faucet, the insinkerator and areas around the bathroom and kitchen that need re-caulking, so why not do it ourselves and just buy the tools to fix them?!?. It will save us a bundle too. I have been searching online for "how to repair" websites and came across a few. The one I like a lot is www.thisoldhouse.com. Not only does it give detailed written information, but it also provides step by step videos. I have already made notes of what I need to do and buy in order to fix them. Not very costly at all. So, do you do your own simple home improvements? or do you prefer to call someone in to fix them? I know the last time we called in a technician to fix our clogged washing machine, it cost us $150 for a 10-15 minute job. Wish us luck!

Good luck!!! I am proud of you! That is a very good idea. I used to work in those area's, so for me it is only normal that I fix most things myself. Only problem I have now a days, is my back. When it gets to heavy my BF has to do the rest. Luckily he is very handy as well. Not like my ex husband. But it sure helps with the costs of things. Of course if something needs repairing from the house itself, a boiler or something, we call the land lord. This is not my apartment, so I let them fix there own. hahaha! Sounds like you are feeling better? I hope so. Take care, Margajoe.

I am feeling a little better today. I just drank V8 fusion juice, water, couldn't resist the coffee though and soup. I'm going to just drink V8 juice tommorrow and water. I don't feel bloated as much today and not very gassy either. I have yet to make an appointment for my physical but I will. Today the schools were closed so spent most of my day watching movies with my son. I'm about to put him to bed - the schools are opening two hours late tommorrow so we get to sleep in a little bit. I was sick of our toilet not functioning well that I decided it's about time I did something about it. I was hoping my hubby might get his hands dirty and fix things but to no avail. Anything that costs less than $150, it's to be paid by us. Anything more the landlord covers it. She had to do to major repairs over the two years we have been here and they were costly. I bought a tool for $8.69 to fix the insinkerator and will visit home depot in the weekend to get parts to fix the toilet and leaky faucet in the kitchen. I also saw an advert for a caulking set for $19.99 or thereabouts. I'm going to check that it's legit before buying anything from them. Then I can get caulking the bathroom and kitchen area. It's going to be fun I think. Fingers crossed no accidents happen LOL Take care too Margajoe,

How hard could it be??? Honestly it depends on the task at hand as to how hard it could be. But for instance the washing machine to fix was $150 you could have bought a used one for that. That is usually the way I look at things. I think that trying to do the repairs yourself will work out great for you. We never hire anyone to do our repairs or installations. Me or Brad fix it all. He is very handy and I am not the kind of woman that thinks that a man has his work and a woman has hers. If we ever buy anything to be assembled I do it. To me it is easier for me just to do it myself. It drives me crazy for women to not be able to do stuff. Aside from the ones that have major health issues and cannot really do stuff. I think that it is great to do your own repairs though because you can save money and do it yourself.

I couldn't believe it when he gave me the invoice to fix our clogged washing machine. I thought it was something more serious. I'm going to give it a go and see how I do. The website has thorough instructions and very easy to follow.

Thanks for that tip about the leaky faucet. My husband thinks I can't do it but I'll show him. When he gets home in a months time I hope I have some of it done, well at least the leaky faucet and insinkerator. I checked the motor of the insinkerator and its still humming so its definitely not electrical - so I think I can fix it according to the online site. Thanks for your support. I'll post a discussion when I complete my first one :)

I think that it is great that you are willing to try. Alot of women do not care to. I like to know how to do all the stuff my man does. We worked in a wood mill together and he told me to tell him which pallets needed to be moved with the forklift and I told him that I would learn to drive it. I ended up getting my forklift liscense. Yea!! The only thing that I do not care to learn is cutting firewood. I tried that one once and the saw acted like it was gonna come up and it was all over. I would like to keep all my limbs in tact thank you very much. LOL!! I think that it is great that you want to tackle your projects. This Old House also has a show on TV that is on PBS and it is a good show. So, I know that the website is great. Also, once you tackle a few and suceed you will be soo proud of yourself. Good Luck. The leaking faucet probably just needs new rings. And you can buy a pack of them at Walmart for like $2 as compared to a plumber would charge you an arm and a leg. Of course you will have to throw in a little elbow grease.

We just call our landlord to fix whatever needs fixing..They are really good about keeping the house up for us.. As for painting and caulking we can do that...we tiled the floor but the landlords bought the tile..We got to pick the color...we do all the painting inside the house... Repairs can get expensive though..This old house is good...they had a program on tv too! Bob Villa and Norm.. Good Luck to you..

Hugs. How are you Terre? hope all is well with you. Haven't heard from you in a while. All major work that needs to be done is fixed by our landlord too. Anything above $150. Anything below we are to fix it ourselves. This year she made changes in the lease, so anything above $75 they will take care of. I'm going to try my best and see how I go. I've already ordered a few things that I'm waiting for in the mail. Thanks for your support.

I wish you all the luck in the world sweets. The house I currently live in was completely remodeled from floor to roof inside and out by myself and my husband. No one helped and we didn't spend a dime on so called pros. My hubs and I both had some experience in our backgrounds, but this was the biggest job either one of us had undertaken. So if you have questions or run into trouble, drop me a line and I'll help you out.........

I love do-it-yourselfer home improvements. It gives such a sense of accomplishment when you actually fix something around the house and it works. It does helps in saving you some cash. I love watching home improvement shows, reading the magazines and just watching closely and asking questions when the tradesmen work. One once told me that if he answered me I would put him and his colleagues out of a job . All the best. I really hope all goes well but trial and error are key factors in this game. You will always learn something valuable.

I definitely agree that DIY will result in massive cost savings. However, it is at the expense of back aches. LOL. I would not pay the technician $150 for a 15 minutes job if I can do it myself. The question is if I were to do it, it might take more than 15 minutes! I would think it is fair if the amount paid is for the years of cumulative expertise such that he can do it within 15 minutes.

I will try my best and see how I go. I have already ordered a few supplies for the insinkerator and am going to home depot in the weekend to buy some caulking materials for the bathroom and kitchen. Will also see if I can find what I need for the toilet. Thanks my friend.
