Dhoni although has very good record as a captain but does he deserve to be called as the best ever captain of indian cricket team. I think that tag goes to Saurav Ganguly. He captained India to the final of the World cup and that to 50 over game. He showed some great guts during his captaincy days. And he gave his cent percent till his retirement.

Dhoni is a fantastic captain. but to say he is the best ever now is bit too soon. he could be one of the best now. he is very good qualities. When Ganguly was on the high we did say this and when he was down everyone critisied his game plans. Dhoni could have such bad occasion and if he could come out good from that dark patch then he is very good captain. For now every thing is going through his control one day luck may look hard on him.

I think that he still needs to prove that. Behind all successfull captain there is a good coach. It was John Wright behind Saurav and now it is Gary Kristen behind Dhoni. We have to measure his perfomance when bad players and a bad coach is given to him. The Indian team today is the best in the world and has a lot of good youngesters to act as substitutes. So it is not much of a big thing to win some games.

Dhoni is worthy succesor of sourav Ganguly and time will only tell that who is great because both are having different strategies and mindset and each have done well leading the team which come to them naturally.

It is too early to give him the tag as the best captain ever. But surely he will emerge as one of the best captain. But we have to wait and see for another 2 years atleast to see how he copes during tougher tours.

I think it will be too early to say anything about it. I do agree he is one of the best captains but can not say he is the best. We can not forget Kapil Dev eho against all odds won the world cup. Neither we can say forget Ganguly who took India to World cup finals. I agree Dhoni has brought home the 20-20 world-cup, but still we should wait before declaring him best.

What would you say the features are for a captain to be called the best? What would you look for in a captain to say if he is best or not? For me A captain can only be judged on one factor, how much respect does he command from his team and from other captains. But if you want to have a wholistic view then ofcourse strategy and leading by example also becoime an important part of captaincy.
Dhoni has not had a long career as a captain yet. we are yet to see his captaincy when he is out of form. ONce we see him captain the side well even when he is not doing well or the whole team is not doing well we will be able to see the true nature of his captaincy.
For me till now the best captain India has seen is Sourav Ganguly. He has always been a big inspiration. The man who dreamt for the first time that India too can have a cricket team and not just 11 individuals doing their best on the ield. He taught the team to play as one unit. No captain ever before stood up for his players the way ganguly did. Fighting with the selectors and Officials for giving youngsters opportunity was one of the biggest plus in him. He brought the change in personality to the Indiandressing room. India was no more a timid country under his captainship.
Dhoni is reaping the fruits of what Ganguly sowed. I dont say Dhoni is a bad captain but there have been enough reasons to believe he needs to mature as a captain as far as strategic angle of the game is concerned. he has lots of guts and like Ganguly and Kapil he too leads from the front but he has to go far to be able to stand in compartison with greats like Kapil and Sourav.
Cheers

nope.i havent had the chance to see how kapil dev captained the team so the best ever captain should be sourav ganguly.the thing about ganguly captaincy was we went to the 2003 world cup after a very bad series against the kiwis and we went to the finals.in dhoni's case,he didnt captain the team in any major tournaments so far except the t 20 and the recent memory sugests that he lost only the asia cup but thats nothing.leve the present srilankan series.we r already ahead.we will be going to new zealand and they r not the best team either.lets take that we lose the test series and the one day series just like england did when we r fighting for the number one spot.if he can manitain his cool during successive failures, then he can be a good captain.he is yet to take the rough path and when he does and succeed,he will be the best.

Dhoni is the best captain of Indian cricket. There is no doubt in it. Sourav was the best captain but why can't Dhoni overtake him. He proved it in the series victories against all the leading teams. He will still prove it. I'm sure that team India will be in the Number 1 in ODI ranking under his captaincy. Do anyone told that it is too early to appoint him as captain. We come to know about his captaincy because he has been appointed as the captain. So, its not early to say that MS Dhoni is the best captain.
