Do you write for money or pleasure?

I would say both. Writing earns me money but sometimes writing is the only thing in the world that keeps me hanging on to sanity. I don't know what I would do if I couldn't write anymore. I think I'd be crazy in less than a month. Lately, though, because of changes in laws writing has become more of a job and less of a hobby which is what I've always wanted and I'm grateful I don't have to do anything stupid to earn money to pay rent. But, still, I miss writing just because or if I felt like it. Now, I have to do it everyday. Otherwise, my debt gets paid much more slowly. It's a trade off and most days it's one I'm happy to make but not always.

I agree. When you need to make money to pay the bills, writing can be like any other job...a grind. Still, there is no better satisfaction when you write something well and can look back at your own work and be proud.
Keep up the good work!

I write on ehow partly for money and partly for the need to write. I get passionate about something and I need to share it. I participate here for fun, any money that comes from it I'll gladly accept but it isn't my focus. MyLot allows me to vent and connect with others. I do have goals of writing a book and also getting a recipe book published. I am working on both of those projects. Mainly, even though I need an income, my writing is creative first.

True enough! If you don't enjoy writing, this is a very slow, tortured way to earn money. I write for Helium and sometimes I am amazed at how long it can take to write an article. It's definitely not a good job if you are looking at the hourly rate! Still, for those of us who enjoy rating, having these online opportunities is a bonus.
Good luck with your writing!

I seldom write for pleasure now, if I get online and start writing, usually it would be mylot or some review site. I just think there are so many places to earn money and it would be better for me to utilize my time for that.

I'm with you. I probably write more for cash than pleasure, but there are days when things come easily and then writing makes me recall the joy of creativity that I feel when I am just writing for myself.
It's like most things in life, I suppose. 90% of the time, it's just a lot of time and hard work, but that magical 10% is what keeps me going.
Good luck with your writing!

I suppose I do it for pleasure at the moment. I would like to be able to make it at least a part-time career eventually, but that's just not possible right now. I post on Triond, but I'm looking for other sites to start posting some writing on also. I write for children and teenagers so I try to make it fun, but also something they can learn from.

I am confident that you will be able to make money over time. I started out writing for fun, and now I do make money each month, although, of course, I would like to make more. I write for Helium and Associated Content and just joined Bukisa. There are lots more sites out there, too. Good luck with earning money online.

Students are always very resourceful in figuring out ways to earn money (as I remember from my college days). The only problem is when you're in school, there are so many distractions, both good and bad.
Still, you might be able to turn some of your school projects/papers into articles for places like Helium or Associated Content. You should consider that!
Good luck with your writing!

Writing is a good way to connect with people, and if you can make a little extra cash, even better. Have you tried Associated Content?

I write for both reasons. I love to write and I love to get paid for it. I cannot understand this choice, however. Does that mean that when you were at school, and the career counselor came around and gave you a choice for what you were going to spend the rest of your life doing, the job you chose that would give you a good income was obviously the one you hated? And if you wanted to be, lets say , a cook, you refused to get a job as a chef because naturally you must only work for money at jobs you hate?
Seems as much sense.

I see your point. However, to really make a living writing, a lot of the time you have to write about topics that you are just not that interested in. Most freelancers write for corporations that dictate the topic. And those desirable topics (like travel or fiction writing) demand a high level of skill and a certain amount of luck.
If you only wrote what you enjoyed (for pleasure), you probably don't make much money. Some people don't care, they just like to write about what they want. This is the issue I was trying to ask about.

I enjoy writing. A couple of college professors I had for writing classes told me that I was pretty good at it and that I should start writing more often. I am glad I found a site like mylot that will pay me at least a little for the things I write while I look for other ways to make my skills pay off bigger for me...I hope to someday make at least decent money through writing, even if I do not do it as a full-time job or career.

I've been writing for pleasure for years. I would LIKE to write for money. Hence, signing up for Assoc. Content. Turns out I had Triond already bookmarked, just haven't gone any further with it. I had heard Helium mentioned before. I've bookmarked that now too. Will have to look into both sites more! I also just signed up on eHow.
I'm not sure how good I'll be at the How-To stuff, but should be interesting at least to try it. BTW, thanks for suggesting Helium (and I added you to my favs in AC)

Good luck with Helium. It can take awhile to accumulate enough articles to start making real money. I suggest that you try the contests and/or Marketplace on Helium if you are going after the big money ("big" being a relative term, of course). Once you've got enough articles under your belt, things get much easier with Helium!
Thanks for following me at AC. Haven't written anything for them recently. I need to think about doing so.

Sincerely, it is very difficult learning to write in another language. Good luck with all your writing!

I have a love of writing which has been in me since childhood. I did not do anything about it for years and wasted a lot of time in jobs I hated instead of pursuing a degree in journalism. It wasn't until my little daughter started at kindergarten that, as a stay at home mum, I began looking for something to do and decided on a course in freelance journalism. I graduated in 2007 and had a few things published but was not paid anything at first. Eventually a parenting magazine bought a couple of my pieces and I was paid! The jobs are few and far between and I am still not making a great deal of money. I write for my blog, Helium, Associated Content, Bukisa, Ezine and many others. Some of these sites do pay. As I said I am not making a fortune from writing yet but I will keep going because I could not imagine doing anything else. My next goal is to write a book. There is a book by Marsha Sinetar titled "Do what you love and the money will follow". I am doing exactly that and who knows? To anyone who loves writing, I say, go for it!

Sounds like you are doing all the right things to pursue your career. I think with writing it is important to constantly hone your skill by writing daily and then, once you have a comfortable market, to try and stretch yourself by taking on something more difficult. These are tough financial times, and competition is more intense. Good luck with your writing. When you are doing something you enjoy, even the tough times can be survived.

I would dearly love to write for money. But so far, that hasn't happened. I love to write. Even without getting paid, I love to write. I miss when I was a teen, and could spend hours at a food joint, sucking down the diet pepsi and just writing and writing. I always preferred Hardee's. They'd let me sit there on the off hours, and keep me well supplied with my soda.
Now, they have a different brand, I'm a lot older so sucking down the pop is so NOT workable, and we live 16 miles from town. It's just not feasable anymore.
I get closure on the things that bother me. I get to explore new worlds and people. I get to tell about the animals I've cared for and that have cared for me.
My hubby even got me a plastic table for outside. So I can sit outside, with the wind blowing (in the summer!), and write to my heart's content. It was a beautiful idea, but not so workable. The cat's know they can jump on the table and take full advantage of having a petting victim. I don't get much writing done now!!
It's hard for me to write in the house. Too much housework looking back at me, no wind blowing, no people to see and make up a story around them. Not as easy!

Personally I find it very hard to be creative. I am much better writing about nonfiction topics. That was sweet of your husband to try and provide a place for you to write outside. When the summer comes around, perhaps you can try again, even with the kitties demanding attention! At least you have an outlet here at MyLot!

Have you tried other writing sites like Helium or Associated Content? Each writing site seems to have its own value. MyLot will not make you rich, but it doesn't demand much either. I have learned a lot here by asking questions on topics I am curious about (such as blogging before I started my own). The small cash that we do receive is a nice bonus.

I have tried writing for both Helium and AC. At the moment I prefer Helium; I suppose because I don't have to come up with a topic. What sort of articles do you like to write (topics)?

Yes, I do expect to get paid from this site, but If I really wanted to make money online there is other places I might go fist, I post here for 95% pleasure 5% money.
Anybody who says its 0% money is completely lieing.

Here on MyLot, you will never get rich, but everyone still enjoys the cash we do receive. Do you write for other sites as well?

I write for a number of reasons; I'm good at it and I like doing it and I can make money at it so it's a win/win situation for me all around. I just wish I could do it full time but I'm not ready to let go of my part-time teaching job just yet.
