Here's my list of my essential freeware programs:
1. Super - I use it for my movie conversion (AVI to DVD compatible file)
2. WinRAR - this is so helpful, especially if you're downloading files in .rar format
3. Recuva - a useful application which can help you restore deleted files
4. Karen's Replicator - I use this to back-up my files for security purposes
5. Notepad++ - this is especially useful if you are a programmer like me
6. Launchy - it is a universal launcher, so that you won't have to use Desktop anymore
7. Super Finder - it is a lot more useful than the Windows search function
Can you add more to the list? :)

Ok, this is pretty common but i do like using CCleaner. I got tired cleaners outthere which only damages my system so i joined the CCleaner bandwagon. I do have some portable freewares mostly coming from PortableApps. I think notepad++'s one of them. HJSplit is quite useful especially for my downloaded files. If not for Adobe Photoshop being the standard editing software, maybe i'd use Gimp. Another freeware that's available on PortableApps.

I like to use many open source programs. Apart from tools specific to coding i like to use following common utilities needed by everyone
1. OpenOffice : which is similar to microsoft office and also supports all the microsoft office's file format.
2. CutePDFWriter: which converts any file to PDF format using print option.
3. ZipGenius : Which is zipping and unzipping utility and which supports all the file formats including .zip,.rar,.7zip etc.
