Do you still remember MS-DOS?

What can you remember about it? Have you played DOS-based games too? How about DOS-based applications like Wordstar and Lotus 1-2-3? Do you still remember that flat floppy disk that's used for system start-up? We've come a long way from the DOS-based computers of yesterday? Do you still fondly remember the days when there were still no xp's and vistas? Let's reminisce.

Remember it? I've still got it, MS DOS 6 that is. Not installed, in it's box. Plus a bunch of the old games like Civilization, Master of Orion, Master of Magic and many more.

Cool stuff! I like Civilization a lot. That's probably one of the greatest games ever. I've played the original one when I was younger and played the sequel in the Playstation, of all consoles.

I bought the original Civilization for two computers, Amiga and PC. I also bought Civ 2, Civilization: Call to Power (rubbish) and Civ IV. Still one of my favourites.

She thought I was asking for money when I say dos. Dos in our language means two. So she would give me two pesos when I say it.

Since I started to use computer very long time ago. So I still know how to operate MS-DOS. Sometimes you still have to use the original operating. As to Lotus 1-2-3, I learned it in the past but I almost forgot it:) I love China

I still remember some of the DOS commands lol... a pity they don't ship DOS with Windows nowadays. What they have is just an inferior DOS prompt...

Yup, years back...the computers then were really unfriendly! We had to use DOS commands to delete, rename, copy and so forth. I started with Symphony instead of Wordstar - and to compare those applications with current ones, it's all so convenient and easy now!

Exactly. I think the worst DOS command back then was a command called "deltree", it will literally delete EVERYTHING! One time my classmate used it on the school computer, he got suspended for 1 whole week because he deleted all the grades of my teachers. Hahahaha.

With Wolf do you mean Wolfenstein 3D? It's a first-person shooter similar to DOOM and Half-Life. I think that was one of my favorites back when I was a kid.

Hi inkyuboz, Sure I have played DOS games and used DOS applications. I still do, in fact, when nostalgia catches me or when I can't find any other things to while my time lol. Disk drives for 1.44 disks, you said? Well, I was shocked when my desktop arrived without an A drive. I thought it was the norm and it felt unthinkable then when I got the computer without one. I had to check back on the specifications to realize that the drive was really not part of the deal.

Yep, I remember all of that stuff all too well. I started using computers when I was nine in 1984, and we used to back all of our information up on to a cassette tape - before the floppy disks. We used to code everything into a TRS-80.

MS-DOS is what I started out on, learning to program with basic, and there used to be a great application/program, Q-DOS, that would slice thru people's passwords like it was nothing...

Oh wow do I remember. We used to spend all night long playing Gold Rush and Leisure Suit Larry. That was some crazy times. I remember making it do things as well. You know typing a program in and it would repeat over and over again. We usually did that as a joke. We used to have so much fun on those looking back now my computers have really come a long way. Thank goodness.

MSDOS was still very common at time of Windows 95 and Windows 98. It is not just some commands - alternative to GUI but there were many commands in DOS that could perform tasks that could not have been done in Windows GUI. DOS is very easy and its commands are easy to use. I know many people still using DOS to write DOS batch files for performing different tasks on their PC.

Yeah, I still use dos very often when my computer show some complicated problems which prevent it from booting properly. Some of dos commands are still very useful today. Here is a story about dos command from my experience: I once installed redhat linux in my computer to form double systems with windows xp. I may boot my pc either into linux or xp. Very convenient with the linux boot loader in which you can select which operating system to enter. I was a novice user of linux at that time. Once my computer could not boot properly and the linux boot loader did not appear and there was no boot menu for me to select. I was unfamiliar with the commands in the linux boot loader and it was a tough job for me to solve. Later I found a simple way on the web to solve the problem. I just booted my pc into dos mode and type "fdisk /mbr" at the command prompt in dos mode. My pc booted properly again into xp and I was very glad with that wonderful command.

My daughter aos love these and even I get on to it.I remember I had crossed the tenth level of the game too before we sol our old computer but now have start alll over again. You ber I do, and even the days before MS-DOS. There were a number of years where I had no contact with a computer. Then a workplace I had my hands on a 286 followed by a 386. At another company they had 486 based computers with Windows 3.0, I did not have much opportunity to play games but I did play a few games like Wolfenstein and Prince of Persia. I had a headache every time I played Wolfenstein due to its graphics. DOS applications which I knew of included Wordstar, Lotus 123, dBase 3, and WordPerfect. I learned GWBASIC and Pascal. all the best, rosdimy

Hello dear inkyuboz, I started learning computer in 386 PC and DOS was the OS. Had to use 5.25" floppies to start them. 1.44 MB 3.5" disks were so spacious. I learned Lotus and Wordstar and dBase III and Foxbase there.Played some games. It was unforgettable experience. It was so tough those days to install new hardware. But it helped me to learn the basics well and to handle trouble with ease. Three cheers for good old DOS

Yeah sure! it was about 8 years ago, I used to play a game called Dangerous Dave in dos. AT that time, in the school we were learning Qbasic, that time we didn't have computers at home and we were so crazy when the teacher allows us to play the game. Whole of my classmates enjoy the class then. And after the class, we discuss till which level did you play.. I still have the game, but don't use it. However it gives the good memory of the past. Sometimes, I feel like to play the game again.
