Do you keep reading material in your bathroom?

My house used to have unread magazines all over the place, especially the ones that I ought to read but didn't find particularly enticing. Then I hit on the idea of putting them in the bathroom. Nowadays I rarely come out of there without having read at least one article, and all my magazines get read in pretty good time. I think I'll have to add a notebook and pen too because I often get inspired with writing ideas when I'm reading. In fact I thought up this post while sitting on the throne this morning. What do you read in your bathroom?

I do so much reading in the bathroom that my husband refers to it as the library.

Just a metal rack with assorted bathroom junk on the top and magazines on the bottom two. Once in a while I'll keep a book that I'm reading on one of the shelves. You see, it really is a library. It's good that this house has two bathrooms.

Yep, I have a small basket with a few magazines in there. I change them out whenever I receive new ones in the mail, or whenever my mother gets sick of hers and hands them down to me. :-)

Over my side, we seldom buy magazines. We buy newspapers though and we keep them all in the living room. When we want to read any in the bathroom, we will bring it in then back out.

I do like the idea of a magazine basket, if you have enough space.

I keep a catalog or two and a magazine in the bathroom. Like you, there are magazines that I should read but never get around to them otherwise. Good idea, about putting a notebook and pen in the bathroom. I think I'll do that, too!

Hi jakill, No I do not keep reading material in my bathroom. There is little enough space as it is lol. All my personal reading stuffs are in my own room while the rest be in the living room. When I am using the bathroom and feel like reading something, I would bring that along with me. Cheers!

Some people just don't have enough space. I'm glad I do though, as I'd probably forget to pick up something to read in my rush to get there.

i dont read in the bathroom, although its a common occurrence to do so, i don't exactly keep a library's worth of reading material to less the time pass by, i just get to business and continue forth with my day. (but i do stare at the art work people leave behind if its a public restroom.) lol.

A quick look has revealed: 1. I don't want to join a book club - book 2. Telegraph Weekend bit from last week 3. YOU magazine from last week I love to read whilst I am contemplating the day ahead/just gone. However, since we had the shower installed and the bath removed; it's made reading books in the shower very hard. LOL.

Maybe that's where the term "steamy novel" came from!

We have two bathrooms in our house - well one full and one half (just toilet and sink). They are both too small to keep anything other than the necessities in them. Both of my daughters and I tend to bring some reading material into the bathroom with us, though. We just can't really leave it there. I remember when I was a kid, we went to a family reunion (we generally had one every year). I remember seeing one of my uncles briefly. He had disappeared into the bathroom most of the time we were there and was reading the Bible.

Hah! Yes, reading in the bathroom could be disastrous if there is only one bathroom in the house! Very true...

If you tend to read in the bathroom, it's always helpful to have more than one. reading the bible in there is a new one on me.

I do sudoku on the pot. It keeps me occupied, is good for my brain and makes me stay there long enough to finish the job. Now you all know my deepest, darkest secret.

I wish I could do sudoku - on or off the pot. I always get close to the end and find I've gone wrong somewhere.

Absolutely! My time in the bathroom is "empty time". When I was studying for my degree, I did my best reading there. Now i take my lap top with me. I don't want to waste a minute of my time here on earth.
1 Feb 09
O? No, no joke. I really do. Just think of the stuff I could miss out on.... I even perch my lap top on the toilet lid, when i'm in a bath, and reach across to type. Possibly an addiction. I love my lap top, and I love the internet.

Whoopee. Someone who actually uses a laptop in there. Some people have actually suggested this as a joke.

What we need is computers in our bathrooms...lol. I always read in the bathroom and it is a good place to come up with ideas. It only makes sense, because while you're in there you aren't sidetracked with other activites like cooking, cleaning or whatever. I have a family that uncannily seems to want my attention as soon as I pick up a book or magazine. The bathroom is the one place where they don't pester me.

Well, one good thing, if you have one bathroom. If the kids haven't stayed on your good side, you can make them wait a bit...lol.

Exactly. The one place we can all have some peace and quiet. Unless, of course, there's a queue forming outside the door.

I used to do that when I have a very interesting book, then I would stay there until I finish the chapter. Now sometimes I take the mail with me, when I arrive home and need to go to the bathroom, I take with me to see what i received.

It sometimes seems like the bathroom is the only place I get any reading done at all. My favorite are the useless random knowledge books that they market specifically for the bathroom. They are light reading that is just mindless entertainment. There is nothing worse than a numb behind because you got too involved in something you were reading!
@jakill (835)

Yes. Something light or quick to read is a good idea.

I take whatever it is that I am reading at the time with me into the bathroom with me, and especially when I know that I will be sitting there for a while. I will admit that there have been times that I almost didn't make it for trying to remember where I last put that reading material as I ran through the house searching for it. I wonder if that is where I got the idea of putting my books or magazines on the back of the love seat that leads to the short hallway that leads to the longer hallway to the bathroom?? mmmm Could be? I really have no place to leave anything in there unless it is on the grandkids' stool, but it would get torn up there, or under the sink, and I would have to manuever to get it out of there if I forgot before I sat down. SO, it is easier just to take it with me each time. I also know that I haven't read it already.

Smetimes in the past, it would take me s long to get around to reading magazine articles that I'd tick of the pages, in case I forgot what I'd already seen. I don't need to do that any more since I decided to start leaving the current one in the bathroom.

Join the club of unread books and magazines left laying all over the house and people ho read in their bathroom. I guess it is just so that one can always have some kind of reading material at hand when needed.

Yes, I always read more than one book at a time. One or more is downstairs, probably near the dining table, while I always have a few on my bedside table too. And sometimes I take one into the bathroom and might leave it there for a day, but not usually longer than that. It will usually be one of those I hate to put down and will read quickly anyway.

My mom puts unread magazines into the bathroom. I don't think about taking paper and pen in there cause normally when I am done I still remember what I was thinking to write for.

We have a basket on the back of the toilet that is just big enough to hold Reader's Digest and handheld games. There have been times when I realize that one of my kids have been in there for like a 1/2 hour. Also, now my 10 year old has started asking me when the next Reader's Digest is coming because he has already read the last one.

We don't, but it is a good idea, to at least make the newspapers and such that we are buying and not reading much of more worth it. I hardley see that anymore even in others bathrooms, though it seemed like when I was younger it was more common.

Here in the UK, in the good old days of outside privys, newspapers had other uses than just reading them in there as well.

LoL, as a child, no one in my household kept reading materials in the bathroom, except my brother. As an adult, married with kids, my wife keeps magazines, calendars and a variety of other reading materials inside of the bathroom, all within arms reach of sitting down on the porcelain "throne." However, we haven't set those type of things out in our guests bathroom, yet, as we have 3 small children. Our youngest would probably tear everything up that she could find within arms reach or worse throw it into the toilet. We have to keep a watchful eye on her. As for me, I don't sit in the restroom long enough to want to read anything, I go to handle my personal business and get out of there. Since we have been fasting from meats though, we've been pretty regular and so it doesn't take long for everything to dispose of itself or come out.

Well now. That could be useful for anyone with constipation problems. Just go veggie.
