How much time do you think is ample for a child to be out playing? Does it depend on the weather in your circumstance? I believe that I let my son play for a longer time in the summer time.

That's really a tougher question than you think. I grew up in a small town in S. California during the late '50s and early '60s. There were no restrictions on my time outside (be back for supper). I would walk to my friend's house (sometimes 4-5 miles away) and nobody thought twice about it.
With all of the problems in the world today, I didn't let my kids off the block and playtime was limited to an hour or two. That's a shame, but there seems to be more nuts loose these days and you can't trust anybody.

My kids are outside between one and one and a half hours at school, so I think that's pretty decent for the winter. In the summer, I let them stay outside until they're sick of being out there. :-) I don't like them to be outside for too long in the winter because it gets VERY cold here.

Time outside is limited in the winter but they can go out if they want to i tend to let them set the limits on how long they want to be out there I mean if they are well wrapped up they cant come to any harm!
My eldest is at school and they have free access to outside play all day no matter the weather if its raining they put wet weather gear on them and she has never come home soaking wet or anything so its all ok.
Summer time i tend to limit their time outside myself purely because too much heat is much worse for them its harder to keep them cool and stop them burning than it is to keep them warm and dry in winter! So summer they only play out after 3pm.

I do let my girls play outside but not as long in the winter. I know they are more than likely to get sick or hypotherma playing out in the cold. If it is anything under say 20 degrees outside than I do not let them play outside at all. I guess I know they hate it but I have there better interest in heart. Nice discussion and happy mylotting to you.
