We got a puppy yesterday and he is so sweet. However his whine that makes him sound like he's about 20 times bigger than he is not so sweet. He is a 10 week old Lhasa Apso/Poodle mix. I get a feeling he never had to live a day of his life in a crate and so he really wanted nothing to do with it when he had free run in the house but once it was bed time I did have to place him in it. He is not interested in the treats so rewarding him right at this moment may be a challenge. He cried for about an hour before he fell a sleep for a couple hours. He was downstairs at the time in the crate. When he started whining around 1:30am I took him out. The ground is frozen and even though I stood out there with him he was not going to the bathroom. So I decided to put him into his crate with a puppy pad at one end just in case. He continued to cry and cry and finally after 30 minutes I decided maybe he would feel better being next to me. So I took him and the crate and placed him next to my bed. Then the whining just got worse. So then I decided to put him into my bathroom which is very large and put his crate at one end with his food and water dish next to it. Placed two puppy pads gave him his blanket a shirt of mine and a couple toys. And....he whined and cried and would not stop again. SO I decided to camp out in my guest room in hopes of some sleep. I closed my bedroom door and at that point I could only hear him a bit and was able to go to sleep. I did wake up a few times to hear him whining still if he stopped in between I'm not sure because I was sleeping. Anyway not that I laid out how our first night went I am asking anyone for advice on how to go about the next few nights. I do have two kids who have to sleep with their door open as one still wakes up a time or two at night. Should I leave him in the bathroom? Downstairs? Is there something else I should try? Any advice is good advice for me right now. This is a whole new experience for me with a puppy so thanks to anyone who can help.

Different surroundings and smells and the possibility that he is still missing his mamma could be the issues @mjaelaws . Being locked up in the crate and secluded may have scared him. Maybe a stuffed animal in the crate will help. @sammy009 could be right, it just takes a little time.

HI. My daughter had the same whining with her dog, she also put her in a crate at night. Her dog did not like it at all, but as time went on she got use to it. It took about a week for her do to stop the whining. It will stop the whining in time. Be patient with the little guy.
