some of my friends can actually read their books while listening to musics. That is quite impossible for me unless i was not really intended to memorize the materials. by doing that actually distract my attention i could be drifted away from the books. i need quietness while studying unless it is for leisure or relaxation background soft musics are good. i prefer complete quietness for study purposes.
how about you?

No - I don't even listen to music when responding to posts either, for the same reason.
When I listen to music, that is the only thing I am doing - listening to music. I hear what the notes are doing, the kinds of emotions they awake - it is a very active process for me, and I cannot do it while responding to mylot posts (or anything else.)
That is the one thing I can't stand about muzak - they have this very soft music in the background while people are going about their business. I can't listen to music if most of the people are talking. I call people on the phone at work, and they have very good music on their hold lines. It infuriates me they interrupt every 15 to 30 seconds stating "Your business is important to us, but all of our associates are busy helping other clients ..." SHUT UP!
Of course if their muzak are sponsoring trash, I thank God for the interruption (I walked out of a movie theatre once, waiting for a movie, because they had this GOD AWFUL pack of TONE-DEAF adolescents EVER to hit the public airwaves ...
So, no, when I study, I study. When I listen to music, I listen to music. If some one tries to force me to listen to garbage when I'm waiting for genuine entertainment ...
... I say "Good-bye."
pity I can't do that when I'm working on the phones ... our lines are recorded.

Yes, when I do homework, or any kind of work. I am always listening to music, if music is not a available I will start singing or humming. Sometimes I might just tap out the beat and people will join in. That makes me happy. So yea pretty much I can study when I am listening to music.

Yes. I can. Listening to music while reading or studying actually relaxes me and stimulates me to think.

Yes I was able to do it on my study time. Actually with music only I can study well but it should be some light music. Music actually encouraging us on any duty. But if it very serious subject need more concentration to remember formula and all I need quietness in the environment, actually I use to study early in the morning that was the wonderful time to read high core subjects. Evening is for subject like history some etc.

There were some claims that some music such as those by Mozart actually improves concentration and helps you study more efficiently.

I would find it to much of a distraction. So no I don't think I would even attempt it. I can block out other things like the TV on but music would interfere with the subject at hand.

Hi lovesummer,
Sure I can!
In fact, I used to find those noisy places to study in. The noisier, the "quieter" and the better I can concentrate.
Absolute silence sometimes freak me out and I find it harder to concentrate on my studying.

I'm one of those people who cannot stand being in a room without either the tv or radio on. If it is too quiet, I can't concerntrate on anyting or even sleep. I have a fishtank close to the bed so I can sleep properly, and the tv is on much of the time just so the house isn't so quiet.
When I still lived with my parents, I was not allowed to have any noise when doing my homework or studying. The room had to be very quiet. This didn't really work for me, but rules were rules. Once I moved out of home and had a radio on all the time, I noticed that I did much better with my assignments and studies, and it was because of the background noise coming from the radio.

For leisure reading i don't listen to music and i can't concentrate from tv noise or any other noise for that matter that's too loud or inconsistent. As for textbooks, if it's wordy and hard to read i'll listen to some music in the background but at a low volume. I can listen to classical music and do mathematical calculations, it's quite relaxing and i feel like it can help me perform better. But overall, i need quietness to study well and concentrate.

Yes, I can do some serious job while listening to music. The background music tuned low is providing good atmosphere for efficient work. I learned that it holds true esp. for males, though i do not know why. Maybe the soft music helps tune in the right mood for the boys to study, who otherwise would be distracted to wild thoughts or activities beyond control. That is only my guess. We need to consult professionals to reach the final conclusion.

It all depends on my mood. Sometimes when I'm tolerant I have music in the background, but when it's something really important I tend to do things in silence because I want to hear myself think.

Sometimes I can, it all depends on the music and my mood. If it is classical music or instrumental, then yes, I can easily study to that, but if it is music that gets stuck in my head to easily and is distracting me from my work, then I will not listen to music.

Hi,
I don't usually study with the radio on. I want quiet place when I am studying especially when I am memorizing something. But if I am just reading something for leisure its ok.
Take care

I am also one of them . I also read books while listening to music. My interesting subject is mathematics. When i do maths question that time i listen music. musics do not disturb while reading or writing something.

I absolutely agree with you
when i write ,remenber things or even just enjoy my reading.i can't have the music going on~ i think it may probably disturb my thought
but my roommate is just on the opposite, she can't do any homework unless listening to the music, even when she do the sport ,she need to enjoy.she says,"she can't live without music.
