Do you keep the TV on just for background noise?

Right now, I have the TV on because I'm alone and I don't like being in silence when it's dark outside. Yes, it's silly - I know. :-) I keep the TV on as "background noise" like this from time to time, but I'm trying to break myself of the habit.

Partially in the morning when I am in working on the Internet. I have it on in the other room but keep an ear out for interesting stories since I have it on Good Morning America. But then I turn it off once GMA goes off and work in silence. I actully prefer the noise and used to leave it on more but cut down on doing that to save on electricity.

Hi stealthy, I'm with you. I try to catch up on what happened while I slept, but also use it to keep track of time while I make my made rush to get out the door for work.
Thank you for your comments.

I don't think it's silly. I actually I kinda do that too but not so often. When people are used to having people around, when he/she is alone, it's just doesn't feel right so we tend to do the alternatives just like that. But yeah, don't depend on that too much. A little time of silence is very nice and good for us. Besides, leaving the TV on is wasting electricity.

i keep the tv on often but not because i'm alone. i like listening and watching tv when i'm doing some other non mental stuff. i once read about a local writing liking to keep the tv on because it is his preferred work noise

It depends really. I do not live on my own and I think that probably makes a big difference. I don't like to have the TV on too often, because too much of it gives me a headache. But if I was living alone, I can imagine that it might get a bit too quiet every now and again so I can imagine wanting in on for the purpose of just having some noise, or 'company' in the background

Hi explorations, and thank you for your discussion.
I always have the TV on, and I'm not even watching it. So, I guess I do the same thing you do.....otherwise, it would be way to quiet around here.
Thanks, again.....

I have kept the tv on for background noise for so many years now, I couldn't tell you when I started doing it lol. When I just have it for the noise factor, I usually have it on one of the music channels. It has never made a difference whether it was daytime or nighttime.

I have done this but now I when I have the TV on I usually turn it to the music channels and listen to the tunes. Sometimes I have the news on as you really don't have to watch but can still get the information. If I am on the computer I have my iTunes on for music.

Jeje, that's funny. I do it too! But only when I'm alone in the house. It give me the feeling that I'm not alone. It is kind of silly, but sometimes that lonely feeling can be overwhelming.
