What would you do if someone broke in.....

Someone just broke into my neighbor's house - my husband saw the thieves climbing over our fence from next door and running away to a waiting car. He shouted for me and ran out after them. I screamed at him to stay back, and call the police instead; I was so scared that they would hit him. Would you run after them? Stayed indoors and call the police? What would you do?

I'd try to get a license plate, and even try to get a fairly good look at the thieves. Then I would call the police. Getting at least the license plate might certainly help the police. Though I most likely wouldn't run after them.

Listen, it's understandable that you might be in a panic. Under the circumstances, I probably would have acted the same way, especially if my fiance had run after them.

Hi Dodo, wished I had kept my cool - but I was in a panic, trying to tell my husband to stay indoors; and he was busy shouting at the thieves, so we hadn't looked at the car plates. Thanks for responding and have a good day!

I would definitely stay in doors. I'm a coward and would never run after strangers who were obviously prepared to fight since they were brave enough to break into someone's house. I'm too scared for my physical well being to risk anything like that :P Thanks for the response on my discussion!

Personally I would Call the Police first, but get as good as a discription for them as I could of the Get away vehicle, description of the guys, etc. You never know in this day and age what weapons someone might have, so it is best to call the Cops and let them handle it from there. Hope these guys are caught.

Hi, I wish we could have kept our cool. We panicked and didn't get a look at their car; however my hubby had a good look at one of the thieves. You're right - we should let the cops handle it... Anyway, thanks for responding and have a good day!

Whilst it makes sense to stay back and let the police do their thing, I think that many of us would take chase when it came to the crunch. It's such a shocking thing to see, that I think adrenalin overtakes common sense. My father once witnessed a similar scene, and chased the intruders. When the police arrived, he was hanging on to one of the guys' legs whilst he tried to escape over a fence!

Your dad was really brave - I wonder whether he would have worried about the guys attacking him. I worried very much about my hubby, when he tried to run out after the thief! Maybe I am a coward after all! Thanks for responding and have a good day!

i would try to follow them while on the phone with the cops.. i wouldnt be stupid enough to draw attention to myself or catch them myself but i would try to make sure the cops got them by keeping the cops informed of where they were.. but thats probably not possible most of the time

I would not risk my life chasing the thieves as you'll never know they might be dangerously armed. Stay indoor and call the police immediately. That is the police job anyway.

Hi Zandi, that's the safest and smartest thing to do - I was so worried about my husband. Fortunately the thieves were too occupied with getting away. Thanks for responding and have a great day!

Oh my... i sure wouldn't run after them... but do as you said... stay put and call the police... or make a lot of noise to wake up the other neighbors... It was pretty stupit to run after the thieves... since they might hurt him with whatever dangerous weapon they have... i hope he won't ever do that again...

Hi Red, most of our neighbors were away - this is the time of the Chinese New Year, and most of them had gone back to their home towns. We had actually just returned back from my husband's home town 2 days ago - we were fortunate that no one broke into ours, as we were away for almost a week! Thanks for responding and have a great day!

Yup, I agree - it's no time to be a hero. Unfortunately we weren't able to see the car number, just the color and make. Anyway, thanks for responding and have a great day!

First of all, it was very brave of your husband to chase after the robbers. I would be terrified too if I was you, but thankfully he's ok. My first reaction would have been to have called 911 and maybe if I had time, grab the digital camera and see if I could get a shot of the robbers or the car or something. I would not chase after them myself unless I was in the car maybe. If I had some protection between myself and them. That sure would be a frightening situation to be in!

Dear MissAmie, so kind of you, but it's not brave of my idiotic husband! He could have gotten himself injured or killed! Don't know what it is with these men, trying to prove themselves as heroes or what! Too bad we didn't have our mobile or digicam on hand - anyway we panicked too, and even forgot to watch out for their car number! Thanks for responding and have a great day!

this happened to us last year.someone broke in and i was glad that my father in-law was sleepng soundly, he never knew that his wallet has been robbed already.good thing that he was safe and the robber fled without notice.just imagine if he saw the robber in his room..it will be a disaster. when he woke up he noticed that his wallet is missing and our helper found it on the stairs without anything on it. we called the police to report the incident and until now we dont know who broke in.

Fortunately they didn't harm your father-in-law. We had cases here, where the thieves broke into an empty house, and finding nothing, waited for the owners to return. It is real scary, as the thieves are getting bolder. Thanks for responding and have a great day!

guess what my friend. the other day, some thieves came inside the other side of our house where we are having our boarding house. and unfortunately, some stuffs of our boarders ares stolen. we didnt see the thief because aside that we have different ways in going in or out but no one is also in the boarding house. the other boardmate lost his cellphone which worth 10thou. i am so sorry for him though, but what can we do? nothing... even if we tried to have it blottered, but i know still nothing will happen. maybe hopefully thy could also be aware and be cautious in the place they are into and always put in mind that it is also their place and they need to treasure it as we do. i guess it happened because again forget to lock the main door. thanks friend jhelai

Hi Jhelai, your friend must be very sad to have lost his cellphone - that's a lot of money! When you have a lot of people staying in a house, especially a boarding house, you have to make sure that everyone remembers to lock up when they leave! Thanks for responding and have a good day!
