I have been thinking of making a website but i haven't been able to decide which I should go for. Should I register my URL as .com or .org.... .com is easier to remember and even if u just remember name like yahoo ...most ppl tend to type.com with name in url but on other hand it is easier to find domain names on .org than .com as nearly all of good names are already taken off by someone else.. so tell me guys which one would u prefer.

there are more choices you know then just .com or .org there is .net.
some of the abbreviations are as followed.
.com means community and the popular choice.
.org means organization and is second popular choice.
.net means network and is third popular choice I think.
there is much more than that and I'm not going to list all of them because the one I list are the most popular.

Domain name .com or .org depend on the purpose.
.com domains were officially intended to designate commercial entities, there has been no restriction on who can register .com domains right now.
Anyone can register a .org domain, there are no requirements for registration. .org was recommended for and perceived by common public to be of non-commercial entities.
You can also add country id as second-level domain, so the domain name will be .co.in or .org.in

Well it all depends on what kind of website you have. .Org would be if your an organization or non profit. .Com can be just about anything. .Com of course is the more popular choice.

I would definitely opt for a .com address wherever possible as it is the most widely accepted URL format. The only time I would deviate from this is if I was adamant about a particular domain name and the .com was not available. The issue though is that the a .com with a similar domain name will always get more exposure than the .org in my opinion; so I would think twice about registering a domain name ending in .org if the same name exists already as a .com.

I suppose if your web page is going to be personal you should go with 'com'. As you said it's both easier to remember, and probably the first thing people will try when they try to reach your web page. 'Org' stands for organization as far as I know, so you may choose it if your webpage stands for an organized effort, a collaboration of ideas from many people. From what I understand you seem to have some difficulty in finding your desired name under 'com' extension. The final decision is yours of course, but if I were you I would stick to 'com' especially if the page is personal in content.

.com, because it is much more known and I do not think you are planning to set up a non-profit organization.

I think it depends on the kind of site you're trying to create ...If its a organizational or non profit , you should opt for .org.....But if you making site of any other kinds , you should choose .com domain....of course .com is more famous and it gains popularity easier....But availability o unique names in .com domain is harder to find..This could be one reason for choosing .org and it could get popular once you get some traffic initially

There are so many domain types i.e .org , .biz, .tv, .net, .com. .co, .ac, etc, etc
All of these are made for specific users for example a business/organization would like to have a .org domain while any other internet website can be .net website.
Similarly you can choose which one best describes contents or purpose of your website.

If it is personal website then I will recommend .com. Why? because .org is associated with organization website (typically non-profit ones). .com is typically used by the company but there are plenty of examples that it is being used for personal purpose. and you are right, it is easy to remember to have a personal website on .com or .org domain.

Hey agrim
I'd go with the .com for the reason you've already stated - it's the first thing people think of. I sometimes take a while to find places because I'm not thinking of 'org' - when I need to be thinking of 'org'. Com will always be the first choice, I reckon, but as you say, you might have to be creative with the rest of the name.

Go for .com, it is more general. If you are writing some information niche such as wikipedia, then you might consider on .org
